I subscribe to this magazine (I now see that Amazon is selling the subscription cheaper then if you do it through the magazine) and it is a very good place to get really beautiful cross stitch patterns in color. In fact, I like a certain artist named Joan Elliott who always posts her new cross stitch patterns here. Later you have to pick them up through her web site at $12.00 each.

Yes, it does come later than if you try and pick it up at Borders or Barnes & Noble but you get it at 1/2 the price by subscription then at the store! Also, if it is a good issue, it sometimes is sold out. So everyone should weigh out the good with the so called bad.

I have to say that I take great offense to what this person "Bookworm4" said about Americans. ("Why oh why do Americans always have to dumb everything down?" ) My goodness, this is NO place to express your dislike of Americans!! If you are American...shame on you! If you are English or whatever, from a foreign country and live in America...double shame on you! I am from Ireland but I am now an American citizen. It is people like you , who make comments like this, who should "Love It or Leave it" Go move elsewhere if it is so horrible here. I think the USA is the BEST and so is Amazon for giving us the great prices they do!!

This is one of the better cross stitch magazines around, but the price is half of what it is here if you buy it from Barnes & Noble. I've also noticed that when you have a subscription, the magazine arrives over a month after it was actually available at a book store. This means you'll end up getting Christmas issues after Christmas.

I understand the previous reviewer's comment regarding the price, but to give a single star gives the wrong impression. The magazine is magnificently produced. The charts are in color, with symbols, and very easy to read. The projects are beautiful and varied. What more could you want. It's worth every penny you eventually decide to spend on it.

Bead & Button

This is a wonderful magazine with a variety of projects, from seed bead work to simple stringing. Simple directions help ease the process of creation, and a glossary is available for true beginners. I find a project that grabs me immediately in each issue, and often look through past months for inspiration.

Great magazine, but the one-year subscription (six issues) is much cheaper if purchased directly from the Publisher. Sorry, Amazon, you need to update your pricing on this one!

I have been a subscriber for many years. This is my favorite beading magazine. I do not enjoy stringing, so the easier bead stringing magazines do not appeal to me. However, Bead & Button has such a variety of projects and techniques, that it will appeal to most everyone. As an advanced seed bead technique lover, I find so much inspiration in this magazine. Typically I find 4 7 projects per issue that I MUST try out. They have a reader's gallery where you can send in photos of your work. Excellent directions that are easy to follow, even for the most complicated pieces. Great magazine. Highest recommendation. I save all my copies and return to them frequently.

I stopped my subscription to Bead and Button because over the years it seemed to gravitate more and more to beading as a means for personal adornment. Each issue was awash in how to bead necklaces, bracelets, pendants, etc. as opposed to beading for visual art sake. I am very interested in Native beading as well as "bead paintings, " beading on cloth or canvas, and artists such as Mimi Holmes, Joyce Scott, Ken Tisa, etc. While Bead and Button has had some great articles in the past, they seemed to become fewer and fewer over the recent years making a subscription, at least for one not particularly interested in jewelry, not worth the cost.

I've been a subscriber since the magazine debuted and have always looked forward to it's arrival. Articles are submitted by some of the top names in Egyptology and are both factually strong and immensely readable. The photos are stunning and not just the standard ones that you have seen over and over again. Each issue has book reviews and news of current discoveries in addition to the in-depth articles. I can't imagine that you would be dissatisfied with KMT if you are an experienced or novice Egyptophile.

I first started buying this magazine back in the 90's. It is well laid out, profusely illustrated with well shot photographs. Some are current, some are historical. The articles deal not only with recent discoveries but also with the history of archaeological discoveries. I started buying it again in 2010 when the information about the DNA studies done on the 18th dynasty royals was published. Great article. This is my third renewal. These magazines are expensive but worth it as far as I am concerned.

Portland Monthly

I agree with the other reviewer there certainly are a lot of ads. Nevertheless, as a long time Portlander, I always enjoy sitting down and perusing the mag from cover to cover each month. It's *not* a hard hitting news source, nor is it usually very in depth. It's not intended to be. It is a slick, glossy overview of the best of what the city has to offer (including the ads). I've had two separate gift subscriptions, and am planning on renewing for myself when this year is up.

I received one issue so far. I love reading about all the local things about Portland. I look forward to the rest of them.

I know all magazines have lots of ads, but Portland Monthly takes it to a whole new level. At least 75% of the magazine is ads, probably more. The remaining pages are usually uninteresting and poorly written. Once in a great while they will have something moderately interesting, but I can spend 5 minutes on the internet and find more interesting content. Needless to say, I won't be renewing my subscription. I wouldn't even read the magazine if they sent it to me for free.

Out of Portland pride, I subscribed to this magazine for over a year and it has put out some decent issues. But see it for what it is: great aesthetics and okay content. 75% ads? Try 80%+ in some issues, mainly real estate which would be helpful to the serial RE investor or out-of-towner but it's too much for the local. (Not to mention Bend is the only clear winner for RE investments in Oregon). The editorial information can be better acquired elsewhere--and more accurately too. I'm a great lover and 15-year resident of Portland and this magazine seems to be "selling" more of a flashy Beaverton-esque image than Portland. I keep telling my visitors Portland is better than it's portrayed here and not as superficial. PM is known for having won numerous awards . . . for layout and design which I do give credit. This is good if you intend to advertise with them. However, when I get Portland Monthly issues in the mail, they go to straight to my roommate who likes the pictures. It's probably difficult to pull off style and substance these days in the extremely competitive and dwindling print media industry. They get a star for trying.

USA Today : the Nations Newspaper - 1 Year Subscription

If you are already a subscriber to USA Today and just want to renew, you should probably wait until your existing subscription is about to expire before ordering through amazon. USA Today doesn't seem to be able to make the link between the existing subscription and one ordered through a 3rd-party, resulting in a less-than-full year extension. I like the paper tho it is the only way I get national sports news; my local paper only covers the local teams.

My nephew was sentenced to 24 years in the "Ham" for a stupid stunt when he was 17 (attempted robbery with two 16 year old boys). The "Ham" is an old state prison near Lovelady, Texas. Clyde, from Bonnie and Clyde, served time there. There are no TVs, little access to outside information, no air conditioning or heating, and certainly no cell phones.

Families are not allowed to send gifts. The only option families have is to pay a publisher to send books and magazines. Even these are reviewed by the prison officials for "acceptable" content. You can't send holiday gifts, nothing but letters, books and magazines. I received an official letter from a prison official saying "you can't send extra stamps in your letters.. it's a 'violation'".

Well my nephew loves USA Today! It's the best source of news and cultural information that's printed daily, and it's a great holiday gift. His release date is not for another 4 years, but since rehabilitation is mostly "virtual" in Texas, USA Today is helping to prepare him for the shock he'll have when he steps outside that prison after 24 years. Without USA Today he wouldn't know much about cell phones, personal computers, gps devices, etc. Now when we visit him, we can talk politics, technology and national events with him. Without USA Today our conversations revolve around prison food with is pretty bad.

Timber Home Living (1-year auto-renewal)

I'm a developer, so I subscribe to these types of magazines mainly for ideas that I can use building spec houses. This magazine has some great pictures, but a large portion of the magazine is advertisements. Given the low cost, I think it is well worth the price.

I don't know if we will ever build our own timber home, but it is sure nice looking at all the possibilities.

This magazine is great for decorating and architectural ideas and was offered at a great price. More than

likely, I will be definitely renewing this magazine. It is a nice, relaxing read.

Militaer Und Geschichte

This is an excellent German military history magazine. It is written in German and there are 6 issues per year. Each magazine has 50 pages. The topics cover all global military topices, but with focus on Germany and Europe. Majority of topics are about WW2, WW1, Prussia, and European military history.

Example topics are: Stalingrad, Operation Barbarossa, Battle of Waterloo, Sinking of the Bismarck, Kamikaze, Operation Desert Storm, German Unification Wars 1864-1871, Pocket of Falaise, Battle of Verdun, Joan of Arc, Battle of Sewastopol 1942, Battle of Cambrai 1917, The Seven-Year War of Fredrick the Great, The Red Baron, Sparta, Battle in the Alps 1915-1918, General Guderian, Kursk 1943, D-Day, Blitzkrieg, Battle of Koeniggraetz 1866, Kreta 1941, etc.

A few of these magazines come with a DVD (so far 3 of the issues had a DVD with a documentation movie included). So far (Nov 2011) there have been 54 issues and 2 special editions.

There is one main topic in each magazine which covers around 1/3 of the magazine, while the rest of the articles are shorter. The magazine is easy to read, has great maps and photos.

While this is of course not a deep dive into a specific topic, it is a good summary and also a perfect introduction into historical topics and afterwards readers can then look for more in depth literature if they want to learn more about a speicfic topic.

This magazine also covers many battles and topics which are barely known, e.g. the German Farmer Wars in the 16th century, war in the Alps 1915-1918 (with DVD), the Battle of Lueneburg 1813 (first battle won by German forces against Napolean) etc.

It is in German and therefore German language skills are required to enjoy this magazine. I love to take it on business trips, since it is an easy read for the airplane.

Lutheran Witness

I subscribed to the Lutheran Witness magazine this past Summer and have received a few issues since. I find this magazine very modern, well-written, and extremely informative in helping fellow members of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod better understand the mission and inner-workings of their church. I have learned everything from the church's fiscal budget, missions and schools and clinics around the world and it's many different types of outreach and charities and it's overall Gospel purpose of spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ to all of the world and loving our neighbors as ourselves. Thank God for this magazine and God Bless you for reading this review.

Technology Review/MIT (1-year auto-renewal)

This is a good source for a quick interesting survey of latest innovations. There are also a few longer articles in each issue that are well written and interesting. The content is easily understood by non-experts in the various fields discussed.

MIT's Technology Review covers a respectable range of technological topics, ranging from, for example, computer security to the guts of an iPad to anti-aging drugs, all in one issue. Also includes a neat section called "To Market," which highlights various tech products, which could be light bulbs, bomb detectors, solar charger, electric vehicles and robots. Shows just how fascinating science can be. A credit to science publishing.

I picked it up in the store and became a subscriber immediately thereafter.

Technology Review, never disappoints, wide range of subjects, with points of view fully discussed. At almost 70 the review, stimulates my mind as being at MIT 51 years ago did. While it won't replace my Scientific American, that's only my personal preference. MIT TR leans toward the business and economics side of technology by tracking start-ups, new tech, energy projects and other things. Of course there are more in depth articles that are always very well written it's just not ALL science like SciAm. If that's what you like, this magazine is for you.

I can't really say that I am enjoying this subscription. I expected the content to be more 'technical' somehow, with it being published MIT. Instead, it does cover in very general terms some overall technology trends, but only to the slightest level of detail. The content is so fluffy and opinion driven that It's almost like you're watching "E" TV, except it occasionally uses the word "technology". I wouldn't recommend it for a serious tech-head.

After about 30 seconds of thumbing through new issues, they go straight to the trash with the rest of my junk mail.
