Conde Nast Traveler (1-year auto-renewal)

Conde Nast TravelerI have subscribed to Traveler for a while now. Before I picked up that subscription, I was already subscribing to National Geographic Traveler and Budget Travel. I have to say that for the average, middle-class person, Budget Travel is the most practical. I enjoy reading it the most because I want to know how to get a great deal . . . not how to get the most for your dollar in First Class. This magazine is definitely geared toward the more affluent traveler. It is also geared toward the sophisticated, chic traveler--not the average traveler. While it is interesting to read about places the wealthy are able to afford and dream about going there, I would rather a magazine cater more to my tastes and more toward the tastes of its general subscription population.

When I subscribed to this magazine, I was already receiving National Geographic Traveller. I was helping with a fundraiser, but I mainly wanted to see if it was as good or better travel magazine than others I've seen.

Well, it was definitly thicker than N.G.Traveller, but that was because the majority of it was crammed with advertisements. The articles that it did have were typically short, and would often have more to do with fashion than travel. I was hoping for travel-related stories and photos, but instead I could hardly turn a page without seeing scantily clad women, as if that was the appeal of the destinations being written about. In one issue, the main story was supposed to be about ski resorts, but it actually focused on a particular woman's clothing brands, and just contained photos of her wearing a bikini in the snow.

I wouldn't consider myself sophisticated, but I would much rather read a magazine that is more informative and entertaining, with content more related to travel. I'm tired of reading lists of the top 100 hotels, resorts, cruises, or whatever, and do not enjoy having to search to find actual articles. If you don't mind spending your money to read advertisements, than go ahead and subscribe. I'll stick with National Geographic Traveler.

I think that in terms of overall content presented, 'Conde Nast Traveler' is the best travel magazine currently on the market. Some other reviewers have raised some valid points concerning article length, and bias toward upscale properties. I think that there are other magazines that might be more suitable for others, including 'Budget Travel' and 'National Geographic Traveler', both of which I also subscribe to and enjoy, though they both have their limitations and issues as well.

So what sets 'Conde Nast' apart? I think it is the willingness to find new and exciting vacation destinations that are still reasonable enough to get to as to make them worthwhile to a large audience. Some of the more exotic magazines have great articles on hiking in Tibet and the like, but how many people are really able to do that (or can afford to do it?) My point is that although it is by no means perfect, I think the editors and writers do consciously strike a balance between the too mundane and too exotic (and expensive) and attempt to focus the majority of the magazine in that area.

This is just too good of a magazine to pass up. The 'Deals of the Month' section alone justifies the price. Of all the travel magazines I read on a monthly basis (currently four) 'Conde Nast Traveler' is my favorite and I highly recommend it.

I'm a consummate world traveler but have to be budget minded. This magazine seems more tailored for the wealthier travelers of the world and doesn't necessarily suit my needs. However, I understand this and still get the magazine for the following reasons: beautiful photos, interesting world stories, great ideas on travel, great itineraries, and it looks great on my coffee table!

I wish there were more articles as I often wade through more advertisements than I care for, but I also understand this is how they make their money. Still, this is enough coupled with the higher scale clientele that stops me from giving it a full 5 stars.

Home Business Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Home Business MagazineHome Business Magazine is a publication aimed at those members of the general populace who either already own a home based business or who have an active interest in the subject and would like to pursue it further. This magazine contains articles relating to all facets of home business ownership from the initial setup all the way through to the payment of taxes at year end.

I read several different business magazines and many of them have to do with entrepreneurship. Home Business is the only one I read that is specifically devoted to starting a business in the home and, unfortunately, it has many flaws that prevent it from being the enjoyable and informative read that it otherwise could be. Probably the most annoying feature of this magazine is the articles themselves and their tendency to be written in a listtype format rather than in a userfriendly way. I realize that people like lists but Home Business takes this a little too far. It makes the magazine seem callous and unfriendlysomething you would consult in the same way you would an almanac. For example, it is common to find a one page article with a title like "Effective Ways to Design a Newspaper Ad", or "How to Obtain Quick Financing". In each instance, these articles will have a short opening consisting of a paragraph or two followed by a numbered listing of different methods/suggestions to solve the problem or answer the question. This makes the magazine read more like a reference guide than a piece of reading material.

Another thing that is annoying about this magazine is the endless advertising. Not only does it get out of hand, it also includes all sorts of ads that emphasize moneymaking schemes and other similar material. Advertisements with titles like "Really Lazy Guy's Incredible Little Secret Idea Can Make You Rich", "Free $9.95 Report Shows You How to Make a Fortune", and "Six Figures in Six Months" clutter the pages of this magazine with getrich quick garbage that everyone knows is unlikely to return even the cost of the introductory package.

Some parts of this magazine are more bearable than others and it's this handful of positive attributes that prevent me from giving this magazine a onestar rating. I like some of the success stories because they depict ordinary people who have succeeded at making a living with a homebased business. But even here, the stories are inconsistent. Some are educational in nature while others have little valuable information to share. And to make matters worse, they are far too shortusually covering only onehalf page each with a large advertisement taking up the space at the bottom of each page.

Speaking of the advertising, this magazine wrote the book on advertisement excess. Advertisements cover about 75 percent of the pages in each issue and it is rare to see even two pages in a row without some sort of advertisement. The ads are posted everywhere, often right in the middle of an article, and they distract greatly from the already limited enjoyment of the magazine.

This magazine is assembled together in such a way that it reads like a collection of articles taken from people in different parts of the country that were shuffled around and published in one magazine. In other words, this magazine has no continuity to it. It's like taking short articles from different business newspapers around the USA and then piecing them together into one magazine.

Starting a homebased business is a goal that many people set for themselves and there is always a need for some good, timely information when you find yourself in this situation. Home Business, unfortunately, doesn't perform its mission very well. If you dig deeply enough you can find a few good articles. But the majority is too impersonal and too shallow (not to mention smothered in advertisements) to make this magazine worth the trouble.

This magazine seems very cheesy to me. It is full of ads and has many typos. The 'stories' and articles were thrown together. It seems like each issue may have had 1 or 2 very small articles that were useful. I also noticed that after I subscribed to this magazine I started receiving all kinds of solicitations in the mail from different 'Start Your Own Business' companies. I'm positive they sell subscribers names.

Don't be put off by HOME BUSINESS magazine's crammed look and its heavy advertisement content.

'Fact is, you get what you pay for. These features are what make this small-article publication cheap and easy to come by.

The magazine majors on the kind of one-off submissions that get sent in by aspiring writers and home entrepeneurs eager to cash in on their experience.

But that's not a bad thing. Many of us trying to accomplish entrepeneurial stuff in the same space we live in do well to harvest the occasional gems. It's not WAR AND PEACE, but it doesn't claim to be.

I like it.

Dirt Rider (1-year auto-renewal)

Dirt RiderThis is a good magazine with lots of useful articles. It is one of the few motocross magazines that I have seen that is not filled with half naked ladies, which is nice for us, because we have small children that are obsessed with dirt bikes and they like to look at the pictures. Highly recommend if you are looking for a family friendly(ish) dirt bike magazine. There is some adult content, but the photos for the most part are clean.

I had to go online and post this review after several shady marketing ploys Dirt Rider has plaqued me with. I have been an avid dirt bike racer and reader of there magazine for 20+ years and gladly paid even bookshelf prices to read it. Just this year I recieved 2 different DVD's that I DID NOT ask for that told me I had to pay for them if not sent back. The first one I sent back immediately with the paid return envelope and wrote on there to never send me any un requested content again other than the monthly magazine subscription. Several months later I recieved another DVD and promptly returned it without watching it as to not be charged for it like the instructions said. This time I wrote a letter and included it in the envelope saying I was no longer going to subscribe to the magazine due to these practices and to cancel my subscription. Who likes to be hasseled with these kind of tactics or has time for this process. The last straw was when I didnt renew my subscription they kept sending me a renewal bill saying I had asked to renew it when I did not. I finally called them today and believe I spoke with someone from India who said they will make sure that my subscripton was cancelled now and I would recieve nothing further. Tired of these BS marketing tactics. For what it's worth, please stay away from them if you are recieving the same problems as I have.

World of Cross Stitching

World of Cross StitchingThis is a wonderful magazine. There are patterns for both beginners and advanced stitchers. Each month it arrives with a free cross stitch gift. I love it! It's also great because they include licensed characters such as Tatty Teddy and Margaret Sherry's designs.

Embroidery

EmbroideryI saw this magazine advertised in a magazine along with several other magazines on sewing and embroidery, etc. As I live in a small town, I asked my son who lived in a large city to see if he could find any individual copies for me so I could see if they were the type of magazines I was interested. Embroidery magazine in particular didn't have much of a blurb with it to know what to expect. Well he bought me a subscription as a Mother's Day gift and as you can see it is a fairly pricey magazine. When I got my first issue from the UK I wanted to cry. Instead of projects, stitches to learn, etc. It was full of news stories and not even particularly about embroidery. It was more a needlecraft news magazine, sort of. It wasn't even about good news stories but more avant-garde type It was hard to really figure out what it was. I did find out that they published a sister magazine that I had seen called Stitches and I emailed the company asking if my subscription could be transferred to the other magazine or please refund the money back to my son as the Embroidery magazine was of no interest to me at all. I love sewing, quilting, embroidery magazines of all types, so say I didn't like one means to me it is pretty bad. My recommendation is find a copy to see first before paying the big bucks for the subscription. You may thank me later.

I don't usually write reviews but I must put in one for the defense of this title! While I understand the last reviewer's disappointment that this magazine does not include instructions, projects and patterns I want to offer my viewpoint on what I see as its merits. I am currently unable to subscribe to this journal at home because of budget restrictions but it is carried at my local art & design library and I've been reading it there. I hope to have a subscription at home eventually and I don't imagine I will ever toss the older issues out once I do! The price seems more reasonable once you consider that this title comes all the way from the UK and I think it will prove well worth the cost for anyone interested in historical textiles and/or contemporary textile art. The eloquent articles are illustrated with high-quality photographs that make it a pleasure both visually and textually. I ADORE this magazine for the way it weaves together past and present. The work included comes in a variety of styles but across the board I am always impressed with the craft of the maker and their unique use of needlework and embroidery skills. As an artist, a crafter and a generally curious person I have found every issue of this journal inspiring. Often I even return to re-read the back issues that the library has archived while I wait for the new issue to arrive. Please do not dismiss it before you have had a chance to hold an issue in your hands and investigate for yourself! Sample articles can be found on the guild's website at the address below. You can also view a table of contents for the current issue. However be warned the images do not appear as nice in the PDFs as they are in real life.

This is primarily a 'trade' publication, with news articles, along with art show evaluations, and product reviews on things pertaining to the art of sewing. If you're looking for embroidery patterns and ideas, this is not the magazine to offer those things... I was very disappointed when I received my first issue, I should have read the review/s... I won't be renewing my subscription.

Has no embroidery in it, the magazine was about the history of embroidery from a couple of countries. Wish I had never ordered

Catholic Answer

Catholic AnswerI have now ordered this magazine for several friends who are either new to the Catholic Church or who are anxious to learn more about it. It is an excellent resource and is full of articles -many in Q and A format -which deal with many interesting faith issues and present full and understandable answers. I, myself, have a fairly good background in the Faith and I find it quite interesting also. Good, solid explanations and interestingly presented.

This is a good resource for learning the about the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church founded by Jesus Christ. It has an attractive lay out, very informative, and is very faithful to Holy Mother Church.

Insight Namibia Magazine

Insight Namibia MagazineI came across insight as a student studying abroad in Windhoek. It is a fairly new publication and was founded as a pet-project by some veteran Namibian journalists in 2004. Since then, the magazine has a built up a reputation for its reports on corruption, the economy, and social issues. I like how it is often fearlessly critical of the SWAPO government and the journalism awards they have won are well deserved. The satirical section also often has me laughing out loud and the monthly review is a great way to catch up on the news. If you are interested in current events from the Southern African region, a subscription to insight is definitely worth the cost.

Art Jewelry

Art JewelryI love this magazine and so will you if you want step-by-step instructions using modern methods of making Jewelry. There are always pictures of items in the gallery as well as how-to articles, and the best thing is that many of the articles utilize Metal Clay. If you haven't heard about metal clay, buy a least one issue of this magazine to see how it works. The format of the magazine is very good--pages lie flat for consulting while you try out one of he designs, for one thing. There is always a list of tools and materials needed, and pictures of the process from beginning to completion. Check it out.

I've subscribed to this magazine for over a year now and I love it. This is a great magazine for jewelry artists. Each issue is filled with lots of great ideas and projects. They really do a good job of covering all aspects of jewelry making, things like metalsmithing, wire work, PMC, etc. I always learn something new with each issue. Very inspiring.

I subscribed to this magazine for digital download and paid for over 6 months. The problem is that when you cancel the subscription, you lose access to past issues too. That was not made clear in the terms and I will never do another subscription. It was so convenient being able to take my Kindle into my craft room.
