Transworld Wakeboarding magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Transworld Wakeboarding magazineThis magazine has some incredible pictures! Watching wakeboarding on TV, you really don't get the same appreciation for how high above the water these guys (and gals) are, and how contorted there bodies can get. Beyond that, this magazine doesn't impress. The articles barely scratch the surface of the topics discussed, and the bios on riders doesn't really make you feel like you've gotten to know them. If you are looking for really cool pictures of wakeboarding, this is your magazine. However, if you're looking to learn about the riders and how to perform their tricks, I'd pass.

This is the best wakeboarding magazine that covers the sport in full detail. It gives lots of good information and the photography is excellent.

We ordered a subscription to Wakeboarding as a gift for our nephew. The order was placed in late September. As of mid-November he hadn't received an issue yet. We got in touch with the publisher and were told he'd get his first issue in February. Five months is a bit long to wait, especially since it is a gift.

I purchased this magazine last year as a gift for my son for Christmas. He loves wakeboarding and has already asked to have his subscription renewed. Considering my son is not a huge reader, I take advantage of purchasing books/magazines if he makes a point of asking for them. To me this means you have put together a great magazine/product! He is also studying graphic design and talks about the front covers.

Seeing the Everyday

Seeing the EverydayI love this magazine! It is filled with great pictures, and stories that inspire me as a mother. I feel so buoyed up after reading these stories. The experiences expressed are of the simple things a parent did that gave that individual the tools needed to become who they are as an adult. It shares how the small, seemingly insignificant interactions of everyday make a huge, positive impact in the life of a child. While I still have improvement to make, this magazine has helped me, over and over, check the responses and reactions that I give to my children when they come to me with their various concerns. Anyone can benefit by incorporating the saying that was in one issue: "The first thing first is kindness."

Fretboard Journal

Fretboard JournalFinally, a killer looking instrument magazine with interesting articles about players and collectors. This mag covers a pretty wide range of topics--interviews with players, builder interviews, some historical/esoteric stuff, etc. Even has some artsy photo spreads of instruments themselves. But I loved every page of the first issue. This is mag is stunning! No tab or instruction but plenty of entertaining, smart articles.

I love it. Even my wife read it!

Most magazines, and guitar magazines included, are primarily mediums to distribute advertising. This is NOT one of those. While it does have ads, they are aimed at the knowledgeable, not the impetuous. FBJ has well written, insightful articles about the music, and the people and instruments which make it. FBJ, as its name implies, explores not just guitars, but all fretted instruments, which allows a great expansion of many readers' perception of the art. The articles are long enough to wonderfully cover the subject, a refreshing change from most periodicals where article size cuts down on ad space and articles are often designed to sell advertiser's product. It explores the artists and instruments of the past and the present. It's one-on-one interviews are exceptional. Pictures are high quality, relevant, and large. Most of all, FBJ carries the reader into the very personal world of instrument making and playing like no other source will, and it delivers four times a year. An exceptional magazine by, for, and about an exceptional group of musicians and instruments.

Surfer (1-year auto-renewal)

SurferI bought this magazine for my surfer husband and he treats every issue as if it were made of gold. If you are looking for a surfing magazine with good articles, awesome pictures and even surfing products and DVD reviews, this is the magazine for you.

At a time when a lot of magazines are cutting back from full color full page photographs, Surfer continues to pump out magazines full of them. This is simply THE best magazine (in my opinion) for seeing the world from a surfer's perspective. There are lots of advertisements (which I like) and lots of stories about all the big name surfers you've heard about. I prefer Surfer to Surfing and TransWorld Surf.

An excellent read, all-in-all. The articles are interesting and full of surf information, recommendations, lingo, culture, competition, and basically almost anything you'd want to know about surfing and it's lifestyle. Full, live and vivid photographs. Just breathtaking, makes my beachy home, that much beachier. Great price and convenient subscription with Amazon, I'll take it, thank you!

International Artist

International ArtistEach issue of this 'magazine' is full of exquisite art, displayed in amazing color. From beginning to end, it is a feast for the eyes. If that were all International Artist contained, it would still be a treasure, but each issue also has numerous demonstrations by some of the finest artists in the world. I have read all of the usual artist magazines and have subscribed to several but I haven't seen this quality of art or art technique articles in any of them. It really is astonishing. As I read each issue I wonder if they can possibly maintain the content quality, but each new issue seems to surpass the last. My only regret is that the magazine comes out only six times a year. But it is well worth waiting for. If you are an artist, don't miss this. If you simply enjoy fine artwork, I think you will be equally impressed.

By the way, this publisher also has a line of art instruction books that are some of the finest I have seen. You can find them on Amazon as well as at the publishers web site. I have four right now, and have my sights on several more.

Internanatial Artists magazine is the best magazine on the shelf bar none. I've read many other artist magazines time and time again, but haven't found anything that compares to this jewel. It provides great illustrations as well as wonderful perspectives that are enjoyable as well as inspiring for your reading pleasure. Not only does it inform, it also provides technical and creative details and images in various media for most artist needs in bold beatiful color. This is a truly a winner!

I think that International Artist is the best art magazine on the market. It is always full of beautiful and inspiring paintings and consistently provides articles about a variety of mediums. International Artist also publishes some of the best art instruction books on the market.

This is my favorite artist magazine and has been for some time. I much prefer it to Artist, if only for covering so many media each issue. Admittedly, it is not the best option for the beginner, although some of the books published by International Artist are good for novices or those picking up a new medium. And, like any magazine I've ever read, some issues are better than others. The reproductions are of a consistently high standard.

I used to be a subscriber and relished the one or two exciting articles each month from experimental artists (like Mary Ann Beckwith, Ann Davidson, etc.). Yes, the rest of the art was too realistic, but at least there was usually one good gem each issue.

Unfortunately, over the past couple of years they have gotten lazy. Instead of searching for cutting-edge artists doing exciting work, they've abdicated their role to fillers from the Portrait Society of Boring Paintings, a columnist who only wants to sell you stuff on his website, and pages and pages of ads for DVDs and books that should be on their website. And can anyone can tell one Harley Brown pastel portrait from another? Repetition is one thing, but an editor's job is to know when a column has run its course and get in some fresh blood. Maybe the editorial staff need some fresh blood?

If I sound annoyed, it's because IA used to be a smashing magazine. I still have the first 50 or so back issues and have bookmarked many a feature from the good old days when the editors had more eclectic taste.

But if you like realism, portraits, and so on, you'll probably enjoy this magazine. (Thank goodness Artist magazine is featuring more abstract and experimental work this past year.)
