Los Angeles Magazine (1-year automatic renewal)

Los Angeles MagazineLos Angeles Magazine has a variety of information for everyone. Some of the stores, fashions, etc... might run on the high end price-wise (especially the paid advertisements). But the magazine always offers a great overview of what is going on in Los Angeles. Covering News, Politics, Celebrities, Fashion, Food and Fun things to do. The best issue is the Annual Restaurant issue this is not to be missed. Restaurants in every price range are listed. Besides the "Dining Out" monthly section, there is "The Top Ten" plays, music, museums and more to do that month. This magazine is a great way to get to know Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Magazine is great and I love reading it, but this Subscription Service is terrible.

I purchased my Los Angeles Magazine Subscription here through Amazon. My first two issues, March and April, arrived promptly. However, it was May 1 and I did not receive my May issue yet, and I noticed it was already on sale on newsstands and people at the UCLA Book Festival had already received it.

I called up the Subscription service number, and the woman told me as a Subscriber, the post office would deliver my May Issue on May 17, even if the issue was already on sale.

That is baffling. As a Subscriber to other magazines, I usually receive my issues before or at the same time as newsstands.

Unless you like receiving you Magazine three weeks late and when the month is almost over, I would not advise you signing up with this Subscription Service through Amazon.

It is now May 19, and I still have not received my May Issue. After two additional phone calls to the Subscription hotline, I was told they would redeliver my May issue but it would take two weeks (which would bring us to June).

UPDATE June 2, 2009: I still have not received my May issue, but funny enough, my JUNE issue came already. I called the Subscription Hotline again 1-800-876-5222, and this time talked to Christy. She told me the replacement issue was due in 3-4 weeks, instead of the 2 weeks maximum I was told by Joyce. What terrible, inconsistent customer service. I was very pleasant to Christy, but she hung up on me as I was telling her to have a good night.

Los Angeles magazine may be great, but their Subscription Service is the bottom of the barrel. I sent a letter to their Subscriptions Headquarters P.O. Box 420235 Palm Coast, FL 32142-0235 on May 19 and have not heard back yet.

When renewal time comes, I certainly won't. If Amazon would let me edit my star rating, I would change it to ONE star. Shame on these people!

Being that LA is my favourite city anywhere, I used to always buy this at my local Borders (until they decided to no longer keep this and keep instead a thousand magazines on stitchcraft or fishing etc). Now I always look forward to picking up a couple of copies when in America. However, I find that between trips, it's only the articles that change. They still review and list the same restuarants and don't change them up as much as they probably could/should.

I do love the articles about various people around town or the things going on in the city, but there is too much of the same material in various editions. I don't want to keep reading the same restaurant listings and the same advertising at the back of the magazine all the time. I agree with another reviewer that this isn't as good as the New Yorker.

These magazine really is just a bunch of advertising. You might as well just pick up a South Coast brochure rather than pay for this. I subscribed for just five bucks a year, and I still feel ripped off!!

There is really just one semi-interesting restaurant related article per issue, but I can just go to yelp instead for free advice.

LA Weekly is better (and free)

I love having this come to my home. I used to read it only in doctor's offices and want to tear out pages of information. Hey, if you live in Los Angeles. It is great to have this subscription. The restaurant breakdowns and reviews alone are worth it. Plus you can always find out about new things to do and see. It's classy and adult.

Rdh

RdhThe RDH magazine is an extremely valuable resource for dental assistants, providing cutting-edge, up-to-date information that's targeted directly to them.

One of the most helpful features is when the RDH magazine shares communication techniques with dental hygienists so that they can effectively communicate information to patients and help them to buy into the preventive dental care steps they need to take to help ensure healthy teeth and gums.

It's also interesting to read profiles of dental hygienists throughout the country to learn more about their lives and their career goals and why they chose the dental care field and how they contribute to helping their patients live healthier lives.

Another key area of focus is pain management both for the patients as they undergo dental procedures and for the hygienists themselves. A recent issue of RDH magazine pointed out hygienists need to proactively fight against repetitive motion injuries, mostly in the neck, back and shoulders. These injuries can be caused by the repetitive use of dental tools and their repetitive placing. The article suggests regular stretching and exercise as the solution.

The magazine is jam-packed with vital information and the price is right so we highly recommend this publication for anyone in the dental assistant profession and anyone who is interested in joining that profession.

Sunset (1-year auto-renewal)

SunsetI subscribed to Sunset for years, like 25 years and then gave it a rest about 3 years ago because it wasn't of much interest to me. I recently subscribed again when Amazon did a sale on this. What a total waste of money.

Sunset used to have a large section on gardening and things to do in your garden for each month. They also recommended new and different plants, sources to obtain them, what to plant and when, etc. This latest December issue had one stinking page with a new rose variety on it, nothing about how to prepare your garden, basically nothing at all. It did have an article in the gardening section on how to create a table centerpiece from pine cones and pine branch clippings. Wow! How unique.

What this entire magazine has become is a strange food magazine with a couple of travel articles on where to find expensive restaurants in the state.

Sunset should return to what it once knew how to do...show you how to build an outdoor project, focus on gardening and landscaping, places of interest in the West, home improvement projects, and toss in a decent recipe each month. It seems as if those days are long gone and no wonder it's not a staple at the supermarket checkout any longer.

I first came across Sunset after moving to Oregon and seeing it in a local store. Wanting to immerse myself in all things related to my new home, and hoping this was the regional equivalent of Southern Living (which Amazon[.com] also sells and which I recommend heartily), I bought the current issue. After looking through the copious pictures, travel news, and recipes, I immediately sent away for a subscription, and I've not been disappointed by any issue I've received.

Every month, I've seen places in the area that I wouldn't have known about, or maybe wouldn't have had time to take a trip to see. The recipes every month have also sounded very tasty, though until now I haven't actually tried to use any of them. The only weakness I see is that, for a regional monthly magazine, it's a little skimpy in its listing of upcoming local events, even for "large" cities like Portland. However, over the long term that won't matter much these are magazines you'll want to keep long after those lists are stale.

I've just had to relocate away from Oregon for employment reasons, but this subscription is like a monthly present from the area, reminding me why I moved there in the first place, and bringing bits and pieces across the country into my new home. Just writing this has got me anxious to try a recipe or two, as I'm sure they, like the magazine, will bring back the "flavor" of the region for me once more.

Buy Sunset (1-year auto-renewal) Now

My Grandmother used to give me all her Sunset Magazines when she was done looking through them. Now my Aunt is carrying on the family tradition of keeping a subscription going.

A unique feature in this magazine is the Recipe Index. You can also find ideas for Travel and Recreation, Garden and Outdoor Living, Home and Design and of course Food and Entertaining. The monthly columns are quite unique. Like in the December 2001 issue, Peter Fish wrote an article about The voice of Christmas which is about Bing Crosby.

In the middle of the magazine, you can find a postcard that says: Information worth sending for. They do all the work for you...you just have to circle the information number to receive information on everything from International Travel to products you see advertised. They never leave you wondering where to find a unique product as they have a "Sources: Where to Find It" section.

The Holiday Section always has me dreaming! Who would not want to walk on the Multnomah Falls Trail in Oregon or stand on a log bridge over a river and just dream a day away. Sometimes I would just like to dissolve into some of the pictures. Especially the last issue, where they showed a cabin in the woods with Christmas Lights in Stehekin, Washington.

If you live in Washington, this is a MUST HAVE!

The January 2002 issue has an article on kayaks and a recipe for French Cream with Blueberry Pudding.

Reading this magazine is really almost a family traditon!

Sunset is a magazine dedicated to the people, culture, and lifestyle of the American west. This magazine divides its space among many different topics, such as food and entertainment, travel, recreation, gardening and more.

I have been reading this magazine for about six months now and there are several things about it that make it worthwhile. The thing that stands out the most are the photographs, and I'm not talking about just the stunning scenery one normally associates with the West (like the National Parks or the coastline). Even the ordinary pictures are striking. In the Gardening section, for example, it is common to find pictures of family homes that have beautifully landscaped yards full of blossoming flowers and colorful plants. In the Home & Design section, one can find nice photographs of home interiors, showing different designs and furniture.

One of the most unique qualities of Sunset is the fact that it is published in five different editions. There is a specially designed issue for the Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, and British Columbia), Northern California (Northern California and the majority of Nevada), Southern California (Southern California and Hawaii), The Southwest (Arizona, New Mexico, and the Las Vegas area of Nevada), and Rocky Mountain (Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah). This is a nice idea and it's one that other magazines should consider emulating. Based on where you live or where you have an active interest, this will be the region that your issue spends its pages covering. My subscription is for the Northern California region, so I am treated each month to articles about places like San Francisco, Sacramento, Reno (Nevada), Lake Tahoe, etc.

One of the specialties of this magazine is food and it is common to find recipes throughout every issue. There is a special section set aside for food, but one can expect to find food articles and recipes everywhere as they read. Even the cover page of each issue features a food dish. And as you might guess, the featured recipes are generally those types of cuisine normally associated with each specific region of the west, with plenty of generic recipes thrown in to make sure everyone has something to cook.

One of the specialty sections of this magazine that I like is the "Value Vacation"a subsection of Travel & Recreation. This section highlights a specific place to travel and then offers a day by day breakdown of things to do and places to see, with the cost for each itemized so you know exactly what to expect. The highlighted city or tourist area can be anyplace in the west and isn't limited to the region that your issue covers. This section is nice because it lets you see in black & white what it will cost for a few days of budget entertainment. It reminds me of some of the television programs shown on the Travel Channel.

Advertisements cover about 40 to 50 percent of the pages of each issue and they are often found in bunches in the front and back and on alternating pages for much of the rest of each issue (typical for most magazines). The ads can center on all sorts of different things. Because this is a combination travel/culture/food/entertainment/home & garden/living magazine, the ads cover a wide range of products and services, from laundry detergent to credit cards to cat food.

Overall, Sunset has proven itself an enjoyable magazine. I don't live in the western United States but this region is my favorite part of the country, so it makes sense that I would find something of value in this publication. I like the photography, the personal stories, the gardening and decorating ideas, and most other aspects of this magazine. If you're dead set in your ways and refuse to read about anything that deviates from your Eastern, Southern, or Midwestern lifestyle, then you may not like Sunset. But for the majority of people, Sunset has much to offer with pages and pages of eyecatching pictures and friendly articles about life in the American West.

Want Sunset (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

This magazine is an excellent reference. My wife and I frequently turn to the current and past issues looking for reciepes, weekend getaways, gardening, and ideas for design and decorating. The magazine's focus is on the west, so most articles relate to activities and places in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, and Western Montana. Sunset has great ideas for your life on the West Coast.

Pointe (1-year auto-renewal)

PointePointe Magazine is the finest American magazine devoted exclusively(more or less) to ballet, as opposed to other dance styles. It is geared towards both men and women equally, and is at an adult level. The quality of the coverage is great, and there are lots of interesting regular features, such as highlighting a dancer of the month and question and answers of famous dancers. The quality of the photography is top notch, as is the fantastic paper it is printed on. It is also very affordable. I don't know any ballet dancers who don't subscribe to Pointe!

Great for dance students and all who love classical ballet. Practical tips for current students, information for all who genuinely appreciate the art of classical ballet. wish this had been available 50 years ago!

Skona Hem

Skona HemI am so glad to see this wonderful Swedish home design and lifestyle magazine offered on Amazon.com!

I have searched for it countless times at U.S. newsstands to no avail. They always have plenty of German, French, English, and Italian mags, but never seem to have the Scandinavian ones, which is a shame, because they are often top-notch, style-wise, and Skona Hem is no exception!

This magazine is a great reflection of the Swedish style, elegant, relaxed, comfortably refined. Granted, one must know Swedish to read Skona Hem, but the pictures are of course universal, and what gorgeous pictures they are!

The subscription rate to the U.S. is rather high, but perhaps if many people subscribe, the price will come down?! We can hope! Enjoy your Skona Hem!

Autism Spectrum Quarterly

Autism Spectrum QuarterlyI "like" this magazine, but I think it is way more expensive than it should be. The fact that this serves the autism community should not be an excuse to charge such a high subscription rate. I did not get enough out of it to continue my subscription.

This magazine is so interesting to read. Its very different from any of the other autism magazines in that they do a fantastic job talking about the latest and greatest research and how to integrate it into practice. You will not be disappointed!

Marie Claire Idees

Marie Claire IdeesThis is a great magazine filled w/ creative ideas filled with French charm and style. But don't order it here, you may never get it and will be out your money. I ordered it 2 years ago and have yet to receive an issue. Amazon customer service was totally helpless and uncaring, they refered me to their outside vendor who had no knowledge of the order. Amazon said they couldn't track it yet they had no problem collecting my money in the first place. Since then, customer service has never responded to any of my inquiries or requests for a refund. Terrible, terrible customer service!

If you read French or not, this is a wonderful magazine. The crafts include embroidery, collage, knitting, tapestry, cooking and more. The fashion and style areas give novel ideas for using junk like funky-labeled tin cans for a beach house door curtain, making mirror frames from bottle caps. Think sort of, Martha Stewart with a French twist. The trimestrial issues have a holiday or seasonal theme, Christmas, Spring, Summer, Autumn.

Every issue has an abecedaire (sampler) in a clever type of embroidery. Usually there is a knitted pattern, most often for babies but not always. There is usually a travelogue to an exotic place, with great photos. And you can get a long long advance look at US style trends--for example, Marie Claire Idees featured toile and transfer printed china years before it got to be a hot trend in the US. I save every issue.

I recently got back from a trip home to Quebec, and bought a copy of Marie Claire Idees at the airport. Well, I adored it and plan to subscribe! The crafts and designs are classy and stylish, a nice change from the "County" style, ducks-and-cows, fake flowers and Disney themes that dominate the craft scene here. If you are sick of pastel landscapes, cartoon characters and cutesy themes, and can get by in French, this is the magazine for you! The only problem is that all their supply sources are in Europe, which is to be expected. And unfortunately it only comes out 4 times a year. It's cheaper to go directly to their site and subscribe there; about 34.00 USD including S&H.

PS, marieclaireidees.com has a discussion and help forum in French.

I love this magazine. The presentation is so lovely and refreshing. I took French in school, but not enough to follow the instructions given for the projects. So, It's purely "follow the pictorial directions." I wish there were some way that this beautiful magazine could be captioned in some way. As part of it's charm is in the french language.

I love this magazine! I was in Paris and found it in the airport and couldn't put it down on the plane. It's full of pictures and ideas and instructions in the back, not lots of wordy fluff or advertisements, but just packed with beautiful, inspiring ideas. I subscribe to Martha Stewart Living and I'd have to say this beats it, however, it is in French and it's pricier to order. It was cheaper in France but I was very happy to find that Amazon offered it since I didn't think I'd see another issue again without going overseas, I think the price is worth it.

Minerva - International Review of Ancient Art and Archaelogy

Minerva - International Review of Ancient Art and ArchaelogyMinerva is one of my favorite mags. I studied archeology in graduate school and classical civ in undergrad and I find it a fun way to maintain a flavor of both. I'm also an artist and I've always been facinated by ancient art forms. Most of the items shown are museum quality artifacts, but I get great ideas for my own work from these issues. The articles tend to be obscure for casual readers, but I find them informative and interesting.

Do yourself a favor, and buy this magazine subscription directly from the Minerva magazine website. You will pay $50 versus the $71.71 on Amazon for 6 issues. Sorry, Amazon! Maybe you will lower your prices.

I am a sculptor, and this is my only magazine subscription. I stopped buying U.S. magazines because of the art speak, and the U.K magazines have now gone international. This is the only magazine which I have ever read religiously from cover to cover. I get to see things that get missed in art magazines, and the object's context is always considered. It is also mind broadening, as I see images that I would never see anywhere else. A major benefit of the magazine is the book reviews. I have bought several international books based on reviews in Minerva, and have never been disappointed. An associated resource is the catalogs from Royal Athena gallery in New York at $5 each, they are a steal.

I cannot understand for the life of me why anything should take 12-16 weeks to begin getting a subscription. I got this for my uncle who is a true history buff and it will take 3-4 months for him to get his 1st magazine. I tried to buy a copy of this at one of the book stores or stands to show him what he would be getting and could find it nowhere. I had to print the page from Amazon to get anything. This is a wonderful, high caliber magazine and it shouldn't take this long to get. Can't something be done about this?

Positif

PositifOf course, the product description is not the right one. Positif is none other than the famous French film journal, the best in France because it is at once serious and inquisitive, refuses dogmas (which Les Cahiers du Cinéma unfortunately espouses, even though some of its articles are of great value) and allows space for the films it chooses to defend. The layout and the black-and-white pictures give it a distinctive, beautiful look. If you can read French and are interested in reading about film, do not hesitate and subscribe to this magazine. Month after month, it sheds light both on the current cinema and the history of film Positif is often noted for its roughly 25-to-30-page-long forays into a topic (recently Robert Altman, or a study about Mizoguchi, Ozu and Naruse). Positif can boast that Variety calls it "by far the best film journal in Europe". From what I can read here and there, I guess it is true.

Vogue Gioiello

Vogue GioielloWhen my daughter graduated from GIA (Gemological Institute of America), she had only one request: Vogue Gioiello! So, we ordered a subscription for her birthday and just renewed. She absolutely loves the rich photographs and beautifully displayed jewelry.
