Los Angeles Magazine (1-year automatic renewal)

Los Angeles Magazine has a variety of information for everyone. Some of the stores, fashions, etc... might run on the high end price-wise (especially the paid advertisements). But the magazine always offers a great overview of what is going on in Los Angeles. Covering News, Politics, Celebrities, Fashion, Food and Fun things to do. The best issue is the Annual Restaurant issue this is not to be missed. Restaurants in every price range are listed. Besides the "Dining Out" monthly section, there is "The Top Ten" plays, music, museums and more to do that month. This magazine is a great way to get to know Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Magazine is great and I love reading it, but this Subscription Service is terrible.

I purchased my Los Angeles Magazine Subscription here through Amazon. My first two issues, March and April, arrived promptly. However, it was May 1 and I did not receive my May issue yet, and I noticed it was already on sale on newsstands and people at the UCLA Book Festival had already received it.

I called up the Subscription service number, and the woman told me as a Subscriber, the post office would deliver my May Issue on May 17, even if the issue was already on sale.

That is baffling. As a Subscriber to other magazines, I usually receive my issues before or at the same time as newsstands.

Unless you like receiving you Magazine three weeks late and when the month is almost over, I would not advise you signing up with this Subscription Service through Amazon.

It is now May 19, and I still have not received my May Issue. After two additional phone calls to the Subscription hotline, I was told they would redeliver my May issue but it would take two weeks (which would bring us to June).

UPDATE June 2, 2009: I still have not received my May issue, but funny enough, my JUNE issue came already. I called the Subscription Hotline again 1-800-876-5222, and this time talked to Christy. She told me the replacement issue was due in 3-4 weeks, instead of the 2 weeks maximum I was told by Joyce. What terrible, inconsistent customer service. I was very pleasant to Christy, but she hung up on me as I was telling her to have a good night.

Los Angeles magazine may be great, but their Subscription Service is the bottom of the barrel. I sent a letter to their Subscriptions Headquarters P.O. Box 420235 Palm Coast, FL 32142-0235 on May 19 and have not heard back yet.

When renewal time comes, I certainly won't. If Amazon would let me edit my star rating, I would change it to ONE star. Shame on these people!

Being that LA is my favourite city anywhere, I used to always buy this at my local Borders (until they decided to no longer keep this and keep instead a thousand magazines on stitchcraft or fishing etc). Now I always look forward to picking up a couple of copies when in America. However, I find that between trips, it's only the articles that change. They still review and list the same restuarants and don't change them up as much as they probably could/should.

I do love the articles about various people around town or the things going on in the city, but there is too much of the same material in various editions. I don't want to keep reading the same restaurant listings and the same advertising at the back of the magazine all the time. I agree with another reviewer that this isn't as good as the New Yorker.

These magazine really is just a bunch of advertising. You might as well just pick up a South Coast brochure rather than pay for this. I subscribed for just five bucks a year, and I still feel ripped off!!

There is really just one semi-interesting restaurant related article per issue, but I can just go to yelp instead for free advice.

I love having this come to my home. I used to read it only in doctor's offices and want to tear out pages of information. Hey, if you live in Los Angeles. It is great to have this subscription. The restaurant breakdowns and reviews alone are worth it. Plus you can always find out about new things to do and see. It's classy and adult.

I first saw G&G at my eye doctor's office. He's originally from Louisiana. When I saw the name I knew my husband would like it. We both grew up in New England and have never lived in the south or spent any time there but we both really enjoy this magazine. Beautiful photographs and excellent writing on a wide variety of subjects: food, music, art, books, dogs, nature conservation, architecture and design and of course gardens and guns. My husband grew up hunting and fishing but since we moved to Santa Fe he has had little opportunity. The articles in this magazine let him 'hunt' vicariously at the perfect quail shoot, dream about owning a $100k shotgun, or plan a dream vacation of eating crab at all the best places. This magazine shows the best country and cosmopolitan sides of the New South and makes us yearn for the gracious life style it depicts.

I just received my first issue of Garden and Gun, and while at first, I thought the name was a joke...the content is no laughing matter. It is a lovely magazine with several articles about Ernest Hemingway and the preservation of his home in Cuba and his boat. How can I not love a magazine that has one whole page with a beautiful photograph of a sailboat and a quote by Jimmy Buffett?

I'm impressed and when this year's subscription runs out, I will renew. Again and again.

It just goes to prove, don't judge a magazine by it's title.

This is a top of the line literary magazine with attractions for both men and women. The writing is top notch professional. There are articles on shotguns, knives, gardening, homes and cooking, all slanted toward those who live or have lived in the southern United States. You WILL not understand nor like this magazine if you are north of Virginia or west of Texas. You will NOT like this magazine if you are on a deer stand the first day of deer season and love it. You will NOT like this magazine if you are an anti-gun liberal, although it is a non-political publication. You WILL like this magazine if you like good literature and want information about good places to visit and eat. There are errors in writing however that lead me to believe that the proof readers and/or editors live in New York City. (Clinton, Mississippi, home of Barry Hannah, is not north of Jackson, but west. An apparent mix-up with Canton, Mississippi, which is north). Part of the fun is looking for the errors, which are not numerous, but do exist. This magazine takes the place of the now yankee-ized Southern Living, and improves on it greatly.

This is a great magazine if you're interested in Southern culture. All of the articles are well written and cover a broad array of topics from hunting to cuisine to travel. Physically, the magazine is impressive as well. High quality paper, large pages and impressive photography are all positive characteristics of the magazine.

The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because it only includes 6 issues in a 12 month period.

I look forward to receiving this magazine so much, and I read it cover to cover every time. The hunting pieces I'm not so into, but they are a part of the culture in the South. This is a classy, beautiful magazine that hits off-the-beaten-path places and people. It's really a delight.

V-Twin

This magazine is published by the same people that brought us Maxim. So if you like Maxim, check it out. If you don't: pass. The pictures are slick, models are attractive, but there is little in the way of information on how to do it yourself or what was actually done to the bike. It is basically a picture book. If you are looking for technical articles, how tos or performance installs; check out Road Bike for metrics or Hot Bike or American Iron for Harleys and Victory's.

Are you a cruiser owner that is sick of all the Harlier-Than-Thou magazines out there? Let me tell you, if all you want is to see a magazine chock full of awesome V-Twin custom bikes and you don't care what part of the globe they are from or what badge was on the tank then you better slap yourself down for a subscription to V-Twin magazine.

While pouring through a recent issue of V-Twin I find numerous four page spreads on fantastic custom cruisers that include a Kawasaki Vulcan 800, a Yamaha Road Star and a Yamaha Royal Star plus pictures of reader's rides showing a Yamaha Road Star and a Suzuki Intruder. Of course there are your typical custom Harley entrants including a fantastic Knucklehead and an INSANE custom from Eurocomponants! There are also heaps of ads for vendors that cater to both the Metric and Harley owners which is nice to see. And of course there are naturally write-ups on product reviews, wrenching advice, bike events, biking editorials and general bike news geared to the cruiser owner.

To me this is a great magazine that doesn't try to push the Harley world down my throat and I don't think I found a disparaging comment towards Metric bikes anywhere which was quite refreshing. V-Twin isn't about bad ... `tudes, nor is it full of half naked women and profanity, it's all about custom cruisers and doesn't attempt to be anything its not. Don't get me wrong, I love a picture of a half naked woman laid over a bike as much as the next guy, but at the end of the day we are here for the bikes, admit it. For the record, I`m the owner of a 1999 Yamaha Road Star that I bought almost four years ago (my eighth bike), plus I am the owner of RoadStarMagazine.com, so you can see that metric cruisers and cruisers in general are a passion for me.

Deer & Deer Hunting (1-year)

I placed my order and within three weeks I had received my first copy in the mail.

Now that's fast service for a magazine subscription. Great articles for the deer hunter. I am starting my third year reading this magazine it has great articles and illustrations and it is solely on deer hunting. A Good buy for the money. A++

This magazine does have decent content, which is why I subscribed in the first place. As an admitted Whitetail junkie I count on good magazines to help me make it through the long off season to October. This magazine is great...when I actually receive an issue. Today is April 8th. Amazon has my order date as December 2nd. The first and only issue I have received was the March 2012 issue. The address label affixed to that issue said my subscription terminates in December 2012. Sooo, I won't get a January or February 2013 issue? I called the subscription office and left a message about a month ago and haven't heard a response. So, last week I called again and the lady who answered the phone got irritated with me because her department doesn't handle subscriptions. She gave me a different number to call and, when I did, nobody answered...again. I won't be renewing my subscription.

Update: 11 April 2012

I finally heard back from their customer service and they have, at least, made an attempt to fix the situation. They've changed the expiration date to January 2013 and resent the June issue. We'll see if it actually makes it to my mailbox.

FILMMAKER: The Magazine Of Independent Film (1-year auto-renewal)

I love this magazine!!! As if it isn't hard enough to find anyone out there with a good appreciation of independent film (and by appreciation, I also mean knowledge), but then you have to deal with all these film nerds who think that if it wasn't done on a shoestring budget by a no-name director, it must be bad.

FILMMAKER does an excellent job of giving an overview of the world of independent film, while still providing good discussions of some more mainstream films. It's tough, when reviewing and writing criticism of any art form, to know what to discuss, and I think that FILMMAKER does this.

I ordered an one year subscription as a gift to my sister. It's a quarterly magazine. My sister only received one issue in 6 months. When she contacted the publisher, they were lukewarm and told her that it's only a quarterly issue, so it's normal to wait for a few months, like my sister can't do the math. They sent my sister a digital format of the magazine, and that was it. This is so horrible. My gift has now become an inconvenience. I say just read the PDF files of past issues online for free.
