Imaginefx

ImaginefxI am a regular U.S. reader of other Future Publishing art titles, and was overjoyed to see the first title on the newsstand of this fantastic magazine.

ImagineFX explores the digital science fiction, fantasy and anime genres through letters, interviews, portfolio expositions and fantastic tutorials. All issues also include pull-out artwork by the featured artist, as well as a companion DVD featuring files for the tutorials, artwork and software. Within the magazines pages one will find a wide assortment of styles and artists, including everything from tutorials by noted conceptual artist Ryan Church to explorations of gothic art by several fantastic artists which all serve to expand your creativity and help you along your own creative path.

On the minus side, most of us U.S. readers will be put off by the per-issue pricetag. But for those living in the U.K. (lucky!) or those U.S. readers willing and able to part with the money, this magazine is not to be missed!

This is a brilliant magazine!

I cannot stress enough just how helpful and user friendly this magazine is, with step-by-step tutorials, Q&A section, book and programme recommendations and beautiful art show casings. It covers a little bit of everything and comes with a DVD containing Demo's, art tutorials, Photo's and fonts and more. It's a magazine written for artists by artists and as a result I found my work improving greatly just from reading and practicing the tutorials in this magazine.

First, this is a great magazine.

Second, you're much better off buying a single issue and getting a subscription from the card inserts or even going to the ImagineFX site and ordering from there. Even with our lousy exchange price it's better than $178. Really bad price here.

Imagine FX is by far the most detailed magazine that I have seen that is completely loyal and devoted to Scifi and Fantasy Digital Art. Whether your a technician or an admirer, this book oozez with talent and technique. The magazine is not a pro's only book and they take a hands on approach to helping amateurs. None of the writers seem full of themselves. They all know they are in a liquid world of a digital medium where everyone learns from everyone. I highly recommend this magazine. It's more than average price tag is worth every penny, especially when every magazine comes packaged with a disc choc-full of demos, tutorials, photoshop brushes and source art. There is no other experience that comes near the likes of Imagine FX.

Rather this has more to do with the quality of the service I have received with Magazine Express, who is the company that distributes this magazine for amazon.

I do not at all recommend anyone subscribe to this magazine through Amazon, you are better off going straight through ImagineFX and subscribing via their website. This service is a whole lot of hassle and heart ache for nothing.

Long story follows:

My last months issue came very late about 2 weeks late, and I called and harassed Amazon and they were very nice and helpful. Magazine Express however took their sweet time and I got my magazine almost a week later (which by now was 3/4 into the month) and the magazine was damaged and missing the disc. So i complained yet again to Amazon employees, who were wonderful and not at fault here, and they said they would do their best to help me. I didn't receive word back from Magazine Express or Amazon until the 30th (which at that point I had already bought the magazine to enjoy), and I even bought the special edition because I wasn't sure I was even getting that. So yesterday (January 3rd!!!) I get both magazines, the december issue and the special edition, and not only are they not actual Imagine FX subscription magazines, with the big cover, they're regular store bought ones.

I call today to find out why I have received them when I asked on the 30th after so long that I didn't want the december issue and I wanted to be credited back my money for the month, since I already bought it after waiting so long. The guy tells me over the phone that "Oh the issues for that month come in at the end of the month". That is not true since i had received all of my first 3 months almost a week early, and also what's the point of having a subscription if I'm just going to get my issue super late and I could just go out and buy it at the store in the beginning of the month to enjoy it for that month.

This is madness!

Just go and get your subscription through ImagineFX website, that is what I am going to do when this subscription runs out.

I have yet to receive my January issue. I guess I get to enjoy it at the end of the month.

Every Day with Rachael Ray (1-year auto-renewal)

Every Day with Rachael RayRachael Ray's "Everyday" magazine (clearly modeled on Martha Stewart Everyday, but with a Gen X&Y appeal) is a mixed bag of goodies for foodies. It's colorful, fairly kitschy (I'm not surprised Ray will be partying with Perez Hilton at SXSW),the recipes easy to read and follow. It's the food equivalent to PEOPLE magazine with its coverage of celebrities and vacation destinations. Ray has interviewed Dennis Quaid,Jimmy Kimmel, and Barbara Walters on their refrigerator contents. Other celebrities chime in with what they've had for breakfast, lunch and dinner (as if I really care)

There are useful recipes. Ray's macaroni and cheese made with cream cheese, broccoli, and carrots is different and delicious. The lemon pasta is light and savory. The chicken stew made with red wine and dried fruits is hearty and flavorful. However,Ray also comes up with some really unholy food combinations (think of the hamburger topped with mashed potatoes she cooked up with Craig Ferguson) that are reminiscent of the '50s. Gastroanomalies indeed.

"Everyday" is fun, light reading. It's NOT for serious cooks. It IS accessible. It's good for occasional perusing, but not worth a subscription. It's a snack, not a meal.

After buying the first issue of Rachael Ray's new magazine I knew I would have to subscribe after only a few pages. Those pages were not only gorgeous and glossy, but chock full of fun facts, great shopping places for food and utensils, and of course tasty recipes that you do want to make. I have collected way too many cookbooks and food magazines that stand untouched because when it really boils down to it, its all about the food and some of those books and magazines did not deliver in the end. I have since bought some great cookbooks and pay more attention to what's inside then what's on the cover.

Rachael's recipes are not pretentious, and they certainly are interesting enough to engage the reader into trying them out. I've made several of the dishes from the Lemon cream pasta, Mushroom pizza, salmon and pasta dishes, to Sangria frozen pops and some great grilled food. Rachel provides shopping lists of standard pantry ingredients and fresh produce to buy, so its easy to see what you all ready have and what few things I can pick up on my way home to make a fun meal. I love making her recipes and adding them to my repertoire, as its nice knowing you can make a certain dish and its even nicer to whip up an easy dinner or lunch using this magazine.

I also adore the fun articles you can find about restaurants, cheese diaries, wine tasting, outdoor grilling and foods for events. The magazine is really a beauty to read and has more information and entertainment than advertising. I cant stand the regular food magazine I used to get that were half full of Cat litter advertising, along with page after page of useless products screaming in my face.

I hope this magazine will continue to bloom because I absolutely adore it and I intend on keeping every issue instead of tearing out recipes like I used to. Great buy and something you can cook out of with the feeling of a mini cookbook but simpler and prettier.

Spa Parties and T-shirts that say "Delish" are very much a part of Rachael's magazine complete with pullout recipe cards and travel features. The recipe cards all have shopping lists on the back, so you can grab the cards and head to the grocery store. There is also a handy recipe index organized by categories at the end of the magazine.

The Kids recipe section encourages young cooks to participate in family meals. This issue had a recipe for a delicious tuna salad with roasted red pepper and grape tomatoes. Just for Kids tips give ideas for how to juice a lemon and there are cute kid comments about the recipes.

Everyday with Rachael Ray embraces life and does it with a realistic flair. In the June/July issue, ideas for picnics include shopping lists and recipes for Melon Skewers with Orange-Lime Marinade. Roy Yamaguchi cooks at home with his family and offers recipes like Miso Cod with Buttered Mushrooms.

What I like most about this magazine is the realistic recipes complete with everyone cooking and enjoying life. The pictures are spontaneous and the series of pictures for the Ice Cream Cake are step-by-step heaven. Just when you think this magazine has everything you could wish for, an Everyday Menu Planner appears to give recipes and shopping lists. Grilled Shrimp with Cucumber Salad and Smoked Turkey Panini are must-have recipes for the summer. Peaches resting on a marshmallow meringue are perfect for dessert after the Baby Back Ribs with Jammy Glaze.

This is a magazine about cooks, chefs and Rachael's recipes. The "Ask Rachael" section gives you a chance to send in e-mails to ask Rachael about her life or to have your foodie question answered in the magazine. She also has decorating advice so now you know what to do with the shells you collected at the beach (or you could find them at Pier 1).

What is the best feature in this magazine besides the recipes? "What is in the refrigerator of your favorite Celeb?" I'm always intrigued.

If you collect cookbooks, there are many featured in this inspired magazine. The advertising doesn't seem to overtake the pages and is subtly blended in so it feels very natural and interesting.

Love the magazine. But go to a book store and take out one of the inserts to order. It is $12 for a one year subscription.

Want Every Day with Rachael Ray (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

I have subscribed to 'Everyday' for two years, and I don't think I will renew for a third. The main reason was that, while extracting my favorite pages of back issues to create a recipe binder, I realized how much of the magazine's content is full-page ads. Serious cooks will not likely be interested in Rachael's Faves, which shows clothing accessories and non-food gift suggestions. The travel section in each issue offers interesting suggestions for accomodations, dining, shopping, and hangouts in the profiled destination. Rachael Ray does try to appeal to readers of many ages, but her many catch phrases and 'Rachaelisms' are tired! 'EVOO' and 'stoup' were clever for about a month, and I have to shrug and roll my eyes at any adult foodie who uses words like 'yummy' and 'sammie' in a written recommendation. Lighten up, you say? Her readers aren't kindergarteners. I'm glad she's proud of her Italian heritage, but she doesn't need to declare it more than once in each issue. For the most part, I like her recipes. They are unpretentious, substantial, and ethnically diverse enough for me. They don't require two dozen ingredients, and they fit into the hectic schedules of most Americans. The photography makes me hungry. Burger of the Month is a great feature, and so is the special recipe for a dog treat. The magazine has undergone some changes in the last several months. Good change: they scrapped B, L, D. A celebrity's spartan daily menu plan doesn't belong in a magazine crammed with high-carb food. The weekly menu planner has also been changed so that all ingredients in the shopping list end up being thoroughly used. Bad change: The entertaining guide in each issue used to feature two great ideas for themed get-togethers, complete with a menu and ideas for ambience and playlists. Now that section just features many quick random tips and reminds me of the how-to-do-anything-better guide in Glamour. I wish $10-Spot would be scrapped altogether, as it seems to annoy so many readers! I understand the purpose of precise cost calculation per serving, but most of us will not go through a whole jar of chiles or chutney before its expiration date. The main thing I dislike, though, is that so much space is wasted by ads. I'll subscribe to a more costly magazine that doesn't have as many; the extra cost would probably be worth it. Time to research...

Coin World Special Edition

Coin World Special EditionI used to enjoy the worldwide coins issue from this company who discontinued the product and "included" the content in the special edition along with paper money. Every month they kept reducing the world coins section. I purchased the product for that section. I won't be renewing. The American coins section seems fine but the paper money and world coins are too little, and seem to be an afterthought.

National Wildlife

National WildlifeNational Wildlife has followed the trend taken by most other nature magazines in the past decade the trend of pessimism. Mother Nature knows there are serious problems for wildlife associated with human society, but I need the occasional pleasant break to keep me out of the depressed state seemingly held by these magazine editors. As recently as ten years ago, National Wildlife and others ran detailed articles about the fasnicating lives of our wild neighbors. Since then, the magazines have gone from a nature documentary format to one of "bad news monthly." With our increasingly urbanized human population, this may be the only way to sustain interest in wildlife and their plights, but I fear it is turning some of us away. While I don't think National Wildlife should shy away from political and lifestyle issues, I do think they should lighten up a bit. The photographs are still beautiful, and the animals are still fascinating. I hope the NWF doesn't lose sight of why we became interested in wildlife in the first place.

I agree with the previous reviewer that National Wildlife is often pessimistic. Sadly, I "get it for the pictures," so-to-speak. The photos are truly beautiful, and they have a yearly contest and issue with photo winners.

In most of the articles, however, it seems the writers are trying to convince everyone that humans are ruining the planet. Probably all readers of National Wildlife already know this, but are interested in learning more about national wildlife . . . which is the name of the magazine, after all. You can't just jump in and tell everyone they're endangering animals and then hope they'll care about it--people need to have vested interest in something to really care about it. They should tell the readers how to do direct things such as birdwatch, start a pond, or plant a wildflower garden. They should educate readers on the habits and lives of various animals, and then let the readers know that the animals are in potential danger. If they make nature FUN for readers, then we'll realize what a loss it would be in our own lives to suddenly be without it. As the saying goes, "you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar." National Wildlife needs to use a lot more honey and a lot less vinegar.

National Wildlife as an organization does try to encourage people to get involved with positive steps, such as through their national campout, Certified Wildlife Habitats and accompanying book (Attracting Birds, Butterflies, and Other Backyard Widlife), etc. It would be nice to see this positive mentality carried over to the magazine itself.

Buy National Wildlife Now

National Wildlife Magazine is a very nice publication for those with an active interest in wildlife protection and general nature conservation. It offers some very good articles on wildlife and the constant struggles animals face as they fight for survival in a world increasingly dominated by humans.

National Wildlife Magazine seeks to inform and educate and its articles include stories about success stories and challenges as well as the occasional article or department that offers up animal trivia and facts. One article may include a story about the loss of habitat for wild cats while another may talk about the brute size and strength of a rhinoceros. Whatever the story, this magazine is right there, informing and educating its readers about the wild and wonderful world of animals.

Advertisements are part of this publication and this fact may surprise some who read this publication for the first time. Many nonprofit organizations publish magazines but a good percentage of these magazines are completely adfree. This magazine has a few ads, but they cover only about onefifth of the pages in each issue. There are few enough of them that they do not take away from the magazine's enjoyment.

Besides the articles, another excellent feature of National Wildlife Magazine is the photography. In fact, I would bet that some people try to get their hands on this magazine solely for the purpose of looking at those amazing photographs of animals in their natural habitat. The photographs are impressive and memorable, with some of them depicting an animal standing still or lying down in the wild and others showing an animal chasing and catching its prey, in high speed detail. Every issue is loaded with these amazing pictures of animals and it isn't surprising that so many readers mention the photographs among their favorite parts of the magazine.

Wildlife continues to struggle for survival and National Wildlife Magazine is one of the better nonprofit publications that bring this information to your home. It is not an easy magazine to find, but I recommend grabbing and reading a copy if you can. It rates among my alltime favorite wildlife magazines.

Bluegrass Unlimited

Bluegrass Unlimitedwell, if you're a follower of the genre this is the magazine for you. each issue has at least 1 interesting, well researched article on a band you've heard of. the album reviews tend to be a bit bland hard to get candid criticism here. but the ads and listings for events are top notch, and the letters and questions sections are full of interesting historical tidbits.

They do like every magazine distributor and send you last month's issue for the first delivery. Sadly, many of the events promoted have already occurred. Everything else was fine.

Donna Moderna

Donna ModernaI ordered this as a gift in Oct. 2006. In Feb 2007 I called to cancel the subscription and receive a refund. It's now been three weeks and over 12 calls later...STILL NO REFUND. I keep getting passed back and forth between amazon and the magazine company. Nobody knows who is responsible nor do they record a call log of what is going on. Each time I call in, it seems as though it's the first time I have ever called about this issue. I am losing all respect for Amazon and would recommend avoiding ordering magazines, especially through this company 'Magazine Express'.

This was the only magazine I read regularly when I lived in Italy!!! I just LOVE this magazine. I has everything and more about women's issues and concerns!

NewBeauty: The World's Most Unique Beauty Magazine

NewBeauty: The World's Most Unique Beauty MagazineThis is by far the most interesting, informative, researched publication I have ever seen. I am a licensed aesthetician and look forward to every issue to let me know about the new products, ingredients, and procedures out in the industry today. I would recommend this magazine to anyone interested in skincare or plastic surgery as each issue is packed full of information. The wait between issues is long, but with so much research in each issue, well worth the wait!

I've always been interested in so many of the topics that I read about in NewBeauty, but didn't know where to find reliable information without scheduling a consultation with a doctor. I was so happy to find the basics on so many procedures, and even more excited about the at-home tricks to try before I actually make a doctor's appointment. I'm also obsessed with beauty products, and there are so many in the magazine that I'm going to try. I can't wait until the next issue!

I bought my sister a subscription for Christmas. When her first issue never arrived, after I had seen it sitting on newsstands I called to find out when it would be arriving. Their answer VERBATIM was "whenever it's ready, it'll be sent out." I said apparently it is ready because it is on newsstands so is there anyway you can check to see when it was mailed? The customer service operator without placing me on hold, said "yes, it's been sent. She should be getting it any day now. Is there anything else I can help you with?" I have never been treated so dismissively in my life. After another week, I checked back again, reconfirming the address because it still had not arrived. They said it had been sent out and they don't know why she didn't receive it and that there were no back copies in the warehouse. It is now almost August and my sister has still NEVER received a SINGLE issue from New Beauty and she should have received three by now. When I saw the latest one with Gwyneth Paltrow on the cover at the grocery store I texted her immediately to see if she had this issue and OF COURSE she has never received it. I called New Beauty today once again to reconfirm her address and to find out what happened to the other issues that never arrived and the lady on the phone said she would see about getting her a back copy of the J. Lo issue but could not confirm when it would be sent out OR when the most recent Gwyneth Paltrow issue would be sent out. Needless to say, I don't expect we'll ever see a copy of New Beauty arriving ever. They couldn't care less about their subscribers. I got her a subscription to PROFESSIONAL BEAUTY and look forward to much better content and customer service!

I picked up NewBeauty the other day to learn more about Botox since I am considering getting it. I had no idea that Botox can be used for more than one thing, which the magazine explained. It was very interesting.

NewBeauty also does a great job of giving over the counter options (that you can buy at Sephora and other stores)as an alternative to surgery and other treatments. I'm definitely going to try the cream recommended for spider veins.

Thank you NewBeauty for educating me on all the great products and procedures out there. I'm definitely getting a subscription!
