Uu World

Uu WorldWell-written, warm, and often thought-provoking and inspiring, this magazine will appeal not only to Unitarian Universalists but also to the liberally religious in general, whatever their denominational affiliation (or lack thereof). The topics covered by the magazine range broadly, from same-sex marriage to a new spiritual vision of evolution (the "Great Story" articulated by Brian Swimme etal) to the importance of reverence for the natural world to the practical power of love.

Texas Highways

Texas Highways"Texas Highways" is a great magazine for folks interested in the great state of Texas. It covers the state by regions, much like the Texas Tourism Board's travel brochure, and gives those familiar or unfamiliar with the Lone Star State a nice taste of things big and small that make Texas so unique. Recipes, travel tips, stories on locals and their haunts, music, and fun are all found here. They're all given to the reader in wonderful articles that capture this truly unique state.

In case you're wondering, I'm not from Texas. I grew up in southwest Louisiana rather close to the Texas border. I love Louisiana like few others do. However, if I had to pick another state as a favorite, Texas would be at the top of the list. I'm an Astros fan, love the music of Gary P. Nunn, and will never turn down a taste of cold Lone Star beer. It's a great state folks, and this magazine catches its spirit exceptionally well.

We live in Texas, so I thought this magazine would inspire some Texas adventures. While the magazine is great, be prepared to wait a long time to get this after you order. I ordered in mid-April and actually got the first issue in mid-July and that was the August issue. In this day and age of technology, why does it take so long to get a magazine out? I know they say 6-10 weeks but that IS a very long time. They need to stream line these orders. If you are into instant gratification, get your copy monthly at the store.

I've found this magazine gives us inspiration on other places to visit here in Texas..even the ads have influenced us to check out some other cities/towns. It has beautiful pictures and well-written articles. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 (4.5 would probably be more accurate) is because I would like this magazine to highlight more places to eat.

Great guide for traveling to all parts of the state. Have subscribed to this publication for years. I enjoy the splendid photography and the limited pages of advertising.

Subscribers look forward to the April issue each year, as it always contains memorable photographs of bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, and other wildflowers that blanket parts of the state in a riot of color each spring. Anyone who travels extensively in Texas or is planning to do so would enjoy this magazine.

Kiwi Magazine

Kiwi MagazineThere are a lot of magazines out there for parents, but Kiwi is one of the few that is dedicated to those who enjoy "green living." If you are a parent or caretaker who likes to feed their child natural or organic foods you'll find many suggestions in this magazine. If healthy living is a priority for you, this magazine is worth browsing. Even the advertising appears to adhere to the standards the magazine espouses. For example, in the latest issue ads include words such as natural, homeopathic, non-medicated, and recyclable packaging.

Kiwi has articles that are of interest to a wide audience, similar to "Parents" or "Parenting." The issue I recently received, the February/March 2011 has a wide variety of short, but interesting articles (nothing more than a few pages). If you like lengthier ones, you may wish to pass up this magazine, but if you are pressed for time and like short, concise, but informative articles you'll love the format. FYI, the layout is colorful, uncluttered, and very appealing. Here are a few examples of what is in the current issue:

* Eco-crafts: There are three crafts that can be made with mostly green or recycles materials. There are "flying bluebirds," a "heart necklace," and "spring blooms." Each of these crafts would be perfect to enjoy with your 5-8 yr. old.

* An article on how KJ Dell'Antonia became a "compost convert." She has four children and "writes about her family's attempts to live a greener and healthier life" in this magazine.

* There is an article on "The Midwife Effect." We learn about one woman's experiences with a midwife and also several things about midwifery that you may have been curious about.

* Three slow cooker recipes, "Vegetable Patch Lasagna," "Nutty Apple-Raisin Bread Pudding," and "Mango-Chicken Chili." Each recipe has prep time, cook time, ingredients, tells you how to prepare it, lists the number of servings, and nutritional information.

I'm a new subscriber, but do like what I see. If you are into growing your family "the natural and organic way," I think you'll enjoy the magazine. It would be an especially nice gift to give to a new parent who wants to relax and learn more about raising a healthy family.

My OB had this magazine in the waiting room and I liked it so much I sort of stole it : ) I like the natural bent of the articles and it is a very fun and easy magazine to read. I definitely like this MUCH better than the more conventional parenting magazines.

Zoetrope

ZoetropeI discovered Zoetrope through the Best American Nonrequired Reading (BANR) series. A significant number of the pieces in BANR are drawn from Zoetrope so I figured it would be worth checking out. I also subscribe to the Paris Review and McSweeneys and find that I only read about half of each issue before something else grabs my interest. But I have read the 4 issues of Zoetrope Ive gotten so far from cover to cover.

Its a steal at 20 bucks a year. And each issue has a guest editor and a ton of great artwork and design.

I highly recommend this.

The stories I've read in Zoetrope have been generally long with a surprising twist close to the ending.

You can check out zoetrope's website to see what's coming up before you subscribe. They sometimes have famous people (writers, tv producers, etc) contribute work.

I will say that unlike the other 5 star reviewer here, I actually prefer the Paris Review. But I also love zoetrope. Both are high quality literary periodicals with amazing content. Along with Tin House and Ploughshares, these are among my favorites, and the reason I check my mail!

You can pick up issues at many bookstores or check their upcoming featured authors on their website... but just take my advice and pick up a subscription. If you love quality literature.

This does make a nice break for me in between novels. Or to take a break during a 800+ page novel (or several breaks if you are reading Ulysses!). The selection of content is wonderful and I admire their commitment to featuring high quality short stories.

I picked this up on a whim. I wish I'd put the money into a book or a twelve pack of beer or an over-due parking ticket.

Hobby Farm Home (1-year auto-renewal)

Hobby Farm HomeI do not live on a farm and I don't have anything larger than a small garden but, this magazine has lots for even me. I use this to come up with ideas for projects to do with my kids. Some the old ways of cooking, canning, and just living are being lost to our children. This magazine brings the older ways back. The kids love the idea of making paper this fall. I have learned how to make wine and an old fashioned German dinner as well as how to make a bird bath that looks like a leaf. This magazine really is wonderful for everyone.

I just received my first issue and was very pleased with it. The photography is wonderful and the magazine is filled with substance, not ads, like so many magazines are. Although I do not own a farm (or even that much land!) it is easy to appreciate the articles as they range from recipes for edible flowers, different types of artisan honey, and reusing items you already have to become better organized.

I love this magazine. It has something for everyone living in the country, and even those that don't. The articles are a good length and they vary, so you can choose what you have time for. The photos are beautiful and inspiring. I wouldn't change a thing. Just don't get too anxious after you order...it said I wouldn't be receiving the subscription for a few months, so I bought the latest copy, only to have it arrive in the mail a week later.
