Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide

Gay & Lesbian Review WorldwideI have come to really like this magazine.

Most gay oriented magazines are not very 'readable'

in that they don't reflect very much.

In this magazine I found so far always something

that really engaged me and gave me a sense of

enrichment. It has a combination of variety and

depth that is difficult to achieve for any kind

of magazine. I' am renewing my subscription.

For sure this magazine is not glamour at all. But you find in it indeep articles about very interresting topics. It offers real reflections about gay life. I always learn a lot of things in it. I would say that it is the Time magazine for the gays.

Buy Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide Now

I was looking for a lesbian magazine that wasn't about celebrities and other nonsense that I did not care for. It also needed to be entertaining or at least hold my attention for more than five minutes. The cover price is $4.95 and the subscription price is the same.

After receiving one issue I cancelled my subscrition. Here are some of the articles that put me to sleep; 1.) Gennady Trifonov, Dissident Russian Poet, Dies at 65 2.) How the Media Suppress Japan's Gay Past (1800's) 3.) Auden's Bardic Return to Oxford 4.) Modernism Comes to Old Albion (1910 London art show) 5.) Humiliation is a Grand Life Event (interview with Wayne Koestenbaum, author of Humiliation). May be great reading for someone with an interest in literature, let's say a professor of English lit at Stanford. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being mindless brain candy and 10 requiring 100% attention while reading, I would place tabloids at 1 and this magazine at 10. I spend my days designing and writing Cobol code, my mind in deep thought so during the evenings I do not desire to occupy my mind the same way. This magazine is not for me but may be what you have been looking for all your life.

Modified Mustang & Fords

Modified Mustang & FordsThis magazine is mostly about mid to late 60's model mustangs and there restoration. There are some really outstanding cars to be found in here. I myself was mostly interested in the 2010 and later model years, and the 03 and 04 cobras. I prefer mustang 5.0 magazine for those models. This magazine seems to have a heavier paper and better glossy photos than 5.0, you'll enjoy seeing these beautiful works of art.

I got this magazine for a full year for my 15 year old grandson! He loves the idea that something personal plus something he loves comes in the mail every month just for him. I hit a sweet spot with this purchase this Christmas!

Green Magazine

Green MagazineThis publication has been in business for over 24 years and whenever I call to order items or renew, they are friendly and my order is taken care of very promptly. Articles and ads are informative and useful for those who want to restore their tractor, or just find a gift item for a John Deere enthusiast. The magazine is mailed monthly and always mailed on time to hopefully deliver when it should to my mailbox. Over the years the issues just increase in pages, with articles and advertising needed to find parts, services, or other items.

I am a relatively new owner of an antique John Deere tractor, but not new to restorations of antique cars. I was looking for a magazine with lots of restoration tips, lots of dealers for "those hard to find parts" and lots of photos of old tractors, farm machines, etc. This magazine seems to have all these qualities to some degree at least. It just needs more of everything to make it a 5 star rating for me.

Buy Green Magazine Now

I have noticed this magazine seems to be mostly ads and has very little content. I have read it a few times but do not think it is worth subscribing . I also noticed some errors in some of the advice given. I want more accurate information than this provides for restoring my tractor.

Airways : a Global Review of Commercial Flight

Airways : a Global Review of Commercial FlightIf you are interested in airlines, airliners and airports -this is a great magazine. Every month, in high-quality high-gloss detail there are stories from around the world. A wonderful mix of old and new, big and small. While there are lots of magazines on flying airplanes or military hardware, this is the one standout magazine for commercial aviation. Includes monthly columns, photos of all the latest paint schemes, and book reviews.

I saw this on base on the magazine shelf in the BX (Base Exchange) on Ramstein AB Germany, so I thought why not. I bought it and was very impressed by the layout: News on aircraft/airlines around the world, great articles, airline reviews on various routes, history, hearing about airlines I haven't heard of, then the ads in the back, and other items of interest. The pictures and articles are very well balanced in this magazine. I've been a subscriber for nearly 3 years now, and will most likely renew a again. Contacting them to hold my subscription when I PCSed (or moved to you in the civilian world), they stopped mailing for the time and contacted them with my new address with no problems. Overall, a good experience!!

strategy+business (1-year auto-renewal)

strategy+businessA friend introduced me to S+B with an article about Chief Marketing Officers (CMO), of which I am one. I read it with interest, so much so that I emailed the author with my questions. He replied promptly and fully which was very refreshing. The fact that S+B gave enough info to contact authors is very good. Also, the articles tend to be longer than most magazine articles so there's 'room' to present ideas in more thoughtfully, maybe even to include supporting research. Some of the other articles WERE research articles with data, charts, etc.

There are two worthwhile points that follow this cautionary tale, so persevere Dear Reader:

The article said that the really strategic CEOs are now seeking a new class of marketing officer: CMOs who have combined operations and CONSULTING experience. That resonated well with me because I have both. Then it sites some credible famous names and their theories such as Philip Kotler whose text book I used in B school. That gave me warm fuzzies too. BTW, Kotler was talking about PRODUCT MANAGEMENT, not strategic marketing, but let's not quibble at this point.

So far so good.

Then, THEN! Then it said to the effect (further clarified in an email from the author) that different "brands" cannot effectively do strategic marketing because of the conflicts caused by distributed organization structures, authority and demands on resources.

Huh? Excuuuuuse me? Is this a marketing article or an OrgDesign one?

(a) what do BRANDs have to do with early product planning? It turns out the author's definition of a brand is what those of us in the working world would call a "business unit."

(b) why is a consulting background critical for CMOs? So that we can give good presentations and influence decision makers. Hum, a consulting background has far greater value than that, but OK, that thesis is true, though trivial.

(c) "Real strategic marketing is a new concept and isn't 'there' yet. I've done strategic marketing in high tech for more years than I wish to reveal, and although turf wars, resource allocation arguments... operated in every decision, the organization structure and mentality were NEVER major obstacles. So the core thesis of a CMO being an emerging trend is, um, shall we say, uh, debatable?

Now that I've nit-picked a single article to death, what about the rest of the articles I read? They were buzz-wordy, flossy, interesting but not substantial. They serve a useful purpose as 'mind candy' and got me thinking and researching in greater depth, which is good. I suppose that's one difference between monthly, thousand word articles and peer-reviewed research papers. :)

Here are my points:

1. This magazine is published by Booz Allen Hamilton, one of the more famous strategy consulting firms. The tone reflects BoozAllen culture a lot, but it's also possibly self-serving. Practically EVERY article I've read so far extolls the virtues of consulting and consultants.

2. Some authors are better than others, not just in writing style, but in CONTENT. The editors might be a committee, or someone whose business background can be deeper. The quality of the contents vary a lot. Marketing advice: They need to come up with a consistent brand and a value promise that are fulfill by every article.

Thanks for reading this whole thing. Hope it was helpful in your decision about whether to buy.

With a very modern layout and a surprisingly liberally-minded and thoughtful style in writing, strategy+business is my preferred management/business magazine. Articles come mostly from the consulting practice of booz-allen, but the contributions rarely give you the sense of would-be scientific, often boring approach of harvard business review. Though the latter is still widely considered the business bible, I find strategy+business has been much more successful lately to find an inspirational, yet critical and relevant approach to business writing.

PETA Animal Times (1-year auto-renewal)

PETA Animal TimesThis magazine is loaded with ways that you can reach out to the animals of our world and find a way to help them. Never say "I am only one person--what can one person do?" PETA can show you ways to do even the smallest of things to protect the animals. Although I don't necessarily agree with everything that I read, I was very motivated to find even more ways to do my share in any way that I can. I have always been a great animal lover and fought against injustices toward animals, so this was a good choice for me.

I received my issue to find it is a PR product for the organization not a magazine. Guess I should have known when it was so cheap. Seems such a waste of good paper!

This is a fantastic magazine for the little bit of money it costs. But more important... this will open your eyes as to what is going on in the animal world and the wonderful inspiring people who are making a huge effort to stop animal cruelty. I highly recommend supporting this cause !!

I didn't order it through Amazon, it was given to me as a gift by a well meaning but oblivious friend. Even if I did like or even find PETA tolerable, the mag is just horrible. Half truths and complete lies populate most of the pages and what ISN'T pure shinola is propaganda or begging for dollars.

There are all sorts of sane, helpful pro-animal publications. This one, is not among them. If you are a card carrying PETA member, who shows up naked at the rallies and is all for bludgeoning anyone wearing fur or eating meat...lets face it you already get this mag at the meetings.

For everybody else, you are about to pay THEM to drop the psychotic animal rights version of the watchtower in your mailbox. Much like the watchtower, if you are Jehovah, it is a very good thing, if however you are NOT...

Flying (1-year auto-renewal)

FlyingI have had this magazine for well over 20 years. It does a good job of reviewing new airplanes, however it concentrates on the high end planes, and gives a good, but small, coverage of the latest (month old) aviation news. It also gives some touchy feely articles on flying from the corporate, private, technical, and professional aspect.

I believe it is lacking in in-depth coverage of future systems, long term reviews of airplanes, and also, long term upgrades of older airplanes. When they do cover used airplanes, it is not in-depth like the new airplanes and they do not go into third party vendors for additional items as much as I would like.

Overall, it is a good magazine, not great. I would still recommend it for one year to see if you like it also.

PS If you read it enough, I get the impression that they are overly conservative on safety yet in real life, I believe they fly normally.

As a private pilot of many years I have enjoyed reading Flying magazine, even before I started taking flying lessons. This magazine does a very good job covering the field from safety to flying various types of private aircraft. It is also interesting to read the personal experiences, both good and bad, submitted by readers of the magazine. I look forward to receiving each issue and recommend it to all private pilots.

I took enough flying lessons to solo but found when I could afford it I didn't have time and when I had time, well you can figure it out. The columns by Martha Lunkin are more than worth the price of the magazine and if I win the lottery I will own an Embraer Phenom.

Motor Trend (1-year auto-renewal)

Motor TrendPros: Its cheap

Cons: Too many articles on high-end cars. Every month it seems like they re-review another Cadillac, or another Mercedes, or another Ferrari. Its very lacking in the economy car, and mid-size car categories. They tend to care little about value or fuel economy and too often leave out very common cars out of their comparison articles. They almost never go back and rereview a car they featured a few years back, which would be great to see how that car has held up after getting some miles on it. It totally lacks any mechanical articles, which would be nice once in awhile. All in all, I wouldn't subscribe if not for the ability to catch a good deal on it once in awhile (.50 cents an issue or less).

Motor Trend is a rather good, well written car magazine for auto enthusiasts. The articles are timely and full of facts and opinions about cars, new hybrids and the like. The quality of the paper is quite good and the print is always easy to read as well.

The cover "story" makes for a big splash but it's not sensationalism: the magazine backs it all up with a beefy article exploring the car, SUV or other vehicle in detail. The articles are peppered with well shot photos that enhance your understanding of what the article is trying to tell the reader.

There are ads and articles for a diversity of people; this month's issue, for example, has an article on the latest Bentley coming out. I suppose that's for the rich. SMILE On the other hand, there is also an extensive review--with photos--of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. I think it's great they cover cars for people in all income brackets.

Look for more interesting articles. They review a Land Rover's performance in Argentina where apparently the vehicle must REALLY climb steep hills; and they take a "first drive" look at the Mercedes-Benz SL63 There's even a brief article on GMC's Sierra's first HYBRID vehicle--excellent!

Of course, you were waiting for me to mention this--the magazine has ads. In fact, it has LOTS of ads. This is one time, however, when I didn't entirely mind seeing lots of advertisements in a magazine. These ads provide the reader with resources for tires, noise canceling Bluetooth headsets, automotive accessories like heavy duty, strong plastic mats for the floors of your vehicle, and more. That's useful for readers who want to keep current on the latest supplies for their cars and, in the case of the Bluetooth headsets, accessories to make traveling by car a much better experience for so many of us.

Overall, I like Motor Trend. It's not for everyone; but it's great in my book. I like the articles that enable me to keep my ear to the ground for new automotive developments; and the advertisements also keep me updated as well.

Great job, Motor Trend!

Buy Motor Trend (1-year auto-renewal) Now

I think the basic impulse for Motor Trend is to rank an auto according to its acceleration speed. How fast does it get to 60? A tenth of a second is world-shaking and important. So is engine growl. The men who wrote these reviews are reporters who try for a fair and logical assessment of the vehicle. They are not consumers who are shopping for cars. I can't recall an article that mentioned exactly what goes into a featured car? Not a word and buddy, that is essential and I'll tell you why. For 20 years I was the marketing director of a mid-size American luggage company. We made our product in the factory I worked in. So I was familiar with every part and every component of our manufacture. Then our owner went overseas to manufacture our exact product. Well it wasn't exact. It was far from exact. Instead of being carefully sewn it was stapled. When our suppliers ran out of basic components, they simply purchased different ones, inferior ones knowing our product would sell on its former reputation. A current example of the utter lack of principle is Toyota. It's a money game and Motor Trend appears to be in on the game by not scrutinizing manufacture and componentry. So I am naturally skeptical of imports because engine roar and acceleration numbers don't tell me a thing about the dependability of the hundreds of parts that assemble in a new auto. And before I spend twenty, forty or sixty thousand for a new car, I want to know a lot more about its manufacture. I often wonder what Motor Trend said about my Olds. I drove it without trouble for eleven years and sold it to a fellow worker who gave it to his son who used it for four additional years through college. And maybe beyond? otor Trend is still here and Olds isn't. Is there something wrong with that equation?

Several times in the past I've almost completely given up on Motor Trend. I even canceled my subscription on two occasions. My main gripe during those times? Too darned many trucks and SUVs. Sure, that's what the U.S. public seems to want, and "Trend" does appear in the name, but boooooring. When they released Truck Trend as a sister publication, I danced for joy and then fell flat on my face when MT seemed to STILL spend 2/3 of every issue on hulking boringmobiles.

In recent months Motor Trend has come full circle and again seems to be focusing on interesting articles about cars. Trucks and SUVs are hardly missing, but in that respect and others MT is tremendously better than it was, say, two years ago. The transformation is nearly astounding. I can still remember the first time I closed the back flap of the latest issue and suddenly thought "Holy smokes, that was GOOD!"

Now definitely worth reading again!

Want Motor Trend (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

I used to read MotorTrend until I started noticing a trend of my own. Every time a German car was compared to American or Japanese cars, the German would always win. When Lexus came out with the world's first 8 speed auto transmission, MotorTrend said, "That's too many gears". When BMW came out later with its own 8 speed auto, it was described as,"Seamless". When MotorTrend came out with its 2010 Car of the Year, the Volkswagen GTI won. Why? The GTI lost to the WRX, MazdaSpeed3 and Mitsubishi Rallyart in every category including 0-60, 1/4 mile, braking, interior space, handling, safety, and price but still came out on top. I wonder how much VW paid MotorTrend to get Car of the Year? How about MotorTrend's comparison of the Mustang and M3 in the article titled, "America's M3". These are totally different cars and of course the M3 won. Price-wise if you comepare the M3 to a Cadillac CTS-V, you'll find that the BMW M3 has no chance in any category with the Cadillac. These are just a few of the trends I noticed. When a lame car like the GTI won Car of the Year, I had enough and never picked up another MotorTrend magazine since.

New York Times - National Edition

New York Times - National EditionIf you are trying to find the perfect gift for one of the intelligent, hard-to-gift persons on your list, a subscription to the New York Times may be a well-received solution.

I had requested a subscription to the New York Times for every occasion (birthday, Christmas, Valentines, etc.) for the past three years, and every year until Christmas 2005, my family and friends disregarded the paper as an odd, if not un-giftable, item to request. Fortunately, my fiance's mother and sister decided to go into a 12-week subscription together. I look forward to Sunday mornings as though each one were a new Christmas. The blue plastic bag in the drive way is a cause for celebration each week-end morning. After the first 12 weeks of the year, I became so accustomed to my week-end ritual of the paper, coffee and Meet the Press that I made room in my own budget to include the price of the subscription.

I prefer the New York Times over other news publications for a very simple reason: it is written to my level and I never feel as though the writers are talking down to me or simplifying the story. I have heard cries of liberal bias concerning this publication, especially the editorials, but when I read this paper, I get the sense that they really want me to know and understand all sides to a story. Few newspapers devote space to complete copies of primary documents (speeches, proposed bills and amendments, etc.) like the New York Times consistently does and this allows me to make up my own opinion on the issues.

News is well researched and balanced, and I especially like their columnists such as Paul Krugman, Thomas Friedman, Bob Herbert, and Maureen Dowd. In addition there is the excellent weekly NYT Book Review, and the occasional scoop eg. the NSA spying flap.

Buy New York Times - National Edition Now

Don't miss the science section published each Tuesday.

The New York Times gives you great stories in depth from around the world. It is the detailed stories and some investigative stories that you can't find anyplace else that are so refreshing to read. Compared to the screaming cable news shows, the news presented in the NYT and WSJ is so much better and more complete that it almost takes your breath away. You will say to yourself "why did I waste my time watching those crazy cable news (really entertainment) shows that are so uninformative?" If most Americans get their news from the TV as I am told they do, then we have dark days ahead. Our society will become less enlightened and less caring.

Read Best Reviews of New York Times - National Edition Here

The New York Times is America's best newspaper. Instead of the short articles found in most newspapers, the Times is full of detailed articles on all subjects -not only news, but science (and the science articles are accurate and don't speak down to the intelligent layman), books, entertainment, and so on. It is also still the paper of record -the place to go to for the text of major speeches, not just the highlights. Finally, it has good, in-depth analysis and feature/guest columnists. If you only read one paper, the Times should be it (though it'll take you twice as long to read as most papers and probably four times as long to read as USA Today).

Want New York Times - National Edition Discount?

Most people know whether they want to read the NY Times or not. This is a review of the Kindle edition. Besides the crossword puzzle, the Kindle edition lacks ads (yea!), classifieds and paid death notices (okay by me), political cartoons (tant pis), and many photographs and charts (but not all). While I've tried to find cheaper Kindle alternatives (and they exist), nothing compares to the NY Times for news coverage, especially if you're a resident of New York State and lack a good local newspaper (in print format or on-line). The lack of photos is usually only a problem in the Home, Science, and Style sections when you're trying to make sense of articles that frequently reference them. The inclusion of political cartoons should be fixable (is anyone listening?). I really appreciate being able to skim the tables of contents to each section so that I can do triage and properly plan how much time I can devote to reading the paper each day. I also like being able to easily read an article to completion without having to hunt out its conclusion in another section. One other improvement I'd like to recommend is that the NY Times editors provide readers with a word count for each article, as so many Kindle papers and magazines do, so I can decide if I have the time to read it before beginning my workday or postpone it until I have more time. This seems like an easy fix and something Kindle readers should be able to expect, given the price of the subscription. (The progress bar at the bottom of the Kindle screen, by the way, doesn't monitor the reader's progress through individual articles, but rather through sections of the paper...not very valuable from my perspective.) One other observation--inexplicably sometimes a news article (often an obituary) gets dropped from the Kindle edition. This doesn't seem intentional, but it happens. But all in all, I'm very happy reading the NY Times on my Kindle.

PS, for those who miss the Puzzle, the Kindle does offer some free word games you can download.

Psychologies - EnglandI love this magazine. I have always had a hard time finding it in the states and the last few months can't find it at all. The articles get right to the point. I find everything about this magazine helpful. Thanks Amazon!!!

Bought my first copy in 2008, and wouldn't think of tossing it anytime soon. Article titles such as: HEAL YOUR PAST-CHANGE YOUR FUTURE, THE SLEEP WELL DIET, FLEX SEX, DR. HEAL YOURSELF, WHAT MAKES YOU TICK?...

I found the entire magazine to be well written, timely and concise with informative and varied topics. Highly recommended.
