Print (1-year)

PrintPrint Magazine has a stiff price for very little substance and lots of advertising. I am disappointed and vote thumbs down for this magazine.

I thought I would try this magazine to see if it really did generate some ideas and creativity. However, (in my opinion) the art work and creativity inside is very lame compared to the covers. You cannot judge this book by the cover as the covers are pretty eye catching, but there are mostly ads and silly stories inside. This may have been a misunderstanding on my part regarding what the magazine's purpose is. So if you want ads and current "thought" on print media this may be good.

Print magazine is a MUST for any designer and a good resource for graphic artists in general. With web design and digital media dominating the market place these days, Print keeps artists informed and educated in their roots. The international taste of the magazine ensures an eclectic mix of what is current and creative in the design community. All designers and art enthusiasts should read Print.

This magazine was a required subscription for a design class. Very nice paper used and the cover designs entice me to read, but after opening I have a hard time finding much inspiration amongst the massive amount of advertising. I recommend flipping through it on the newsstand (if you can, there's a ton of heavy card stock ads in there) and maybe buying it whenever you see something of interest. Very little bang for your buck in a subscription.

Shotgun Sports Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Shotgun Sports MagazineI have been reading this magazine for a couple of years now. Each issue always has something interesting in it.

It has good unbiased product reviews, reloading info, tips on technique from some top professional like Chris Batha.

Outshines all other Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays magazines in my view.

I have been reading Shotgun Sports now for two years. It is one of the best publications for the shotgun enthusiast. The articles are timely, well written, and appropriate for all levels of shooters. I highly recommend it to all of you out there interested in shotguns or improving your game.

This magazine is great because it focuses on shotgun sports and nothing but. It's advertisers deal with nothing but shooting related stuff. It is just what I needed to enhance my knowledge of the sport..

Kitchen Garden - England

Kitchen Garden - EnglandI lived in the UK (East Kent) for two years and subscribed to Kitchen Gardens. It was marvelous -advice on what grew in my area, what to do in the garden this month, new plant varieties, new seed offers, experience of other UK gardeners in challenging environments, the restructuring of medieval kitchen gardens -in short, a wonderful read and guide to kitchen gardening in the UK.

And at GBP 3 per issue, quite reasonably priced ... but $100 for 6 issues, describing seeds we are unlikely to get, growing conditions unlike what we deal with, shows (and garden tours) we can't attend ... it's still a great read, but its utility is vastly reduced and one has to wonder about the cost/benefit ratio ...

I decided that as much as I loved it in the UK, it's a pass in the US. Sorry ...

Crochet Today! (1-year auto-renewal)

Crochet Today!I got a subscription to this magazine as a gift. I have already received 6 issues and I have not been disappointed with any. Every issue has helpful tips, and a wonderful variety of projects that are well written, and illustrated. The yarn choices used for the projects are very easy to find, and are usually quite economical. One of my favorite features of this magazine is a quick reference in the back of every issue that covers basic stitches, and yarn substitutions (by both type of yarn, and brand). I have purchased several other crochet magazines, and this one is by far the best.

I am really surprised at the great reviews for this magazine. I'm a relatively new crocheter (I can read a pattern, I know all the basic stitches, can figure out the more complex ones, and I know how to check my gauge and adjust accordingly) and I don't think Crochet Today works for beginners at all. My main complaint is corrections. EVERY issue has one or more--usually more--patterns that have problems in it. Extra rows left off, too few stitches to begin the item, too many stitches to begin the item, incomplete rows, and other problems that a newbie wouldn't know how to fix. There are so many corrections that Crochet Today has a special "corrections" tab on its website. As a beginner, rarely will it occur to me that the problems in the item are due to a faulty pattern... of course I think that I must have done something wrong. This is maddening. Count my stitches, check the pattern, count my stitches again, check the pattern again, pull out the row and do it again, see what I can do, pull out that row too...

What really irks me is this: I understand the occasional error (and by "occasional" I mean one or two A YEAR) but I can't figure out why there are so many errors in this particular publication. It would be different if this were a general interest magazine or maybe a craft magazine not dedicated to knitting and crocheting. But this magazine is called CROCHET TODAY. All they do is print crochet patterns. You'd think there would be a crew of people testing to make sure that each pattern works the way it should. I mean, IT'S A CROCHET PATTERN BOOK! I've never gotten an issue of Vegetarian Times--which prints vegetarian recipes almost exclusively--where there was a corrections page that said, "Oopsie! You know that chocolate pie recipe we printed last month? We told you to use 4 oz. of bittersweet chocolate. Well what we meant to say was 8 oz. But we're guessing you figured that out since your finished pie probably tasted like crap."

That being said, the patterns are beautiful and fairly easy to read. They are graded beginner, easy, intermediate and expert and those gradings seem to be accurate. And like some other reviewers said, it has a handy stitch guide and pattern reading decoder (no decoder ring required), along with an index with both name and picture in the back of the book. I've made a couple of things that turned out as lovely as can be expected from a novice and I've attempted ones with enough errors to make me want to stab myself with my crochet hook.

RECOMMENDED FOR INTERMEDIATE TO EXPERT CROCHETERS ONLY.

Good magazine so far. I am actually thinking of getting a subscription. The patterns are not so far out there like Interweave Knits and Vogue Knitting lately. The patterns seem to be for real people and have easy to find yarns. Good mix of good yarns and cheaper ones.

You can go to their website and preview all patterns from that issue too.

There is a nice variety of patterns and most aren't too difficult to crochet. There is usually at least one pretty wearable to crochet in each issue. Many items can be finished in an evening or weekend and they are fairly modern or "freshened up" patterns of old favorites.

Want Crochet Today! (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

I have utilized and previewed MANY crochet magazines. As an avid crocheter for more than 8 years and a crochet teacher for 3, I can wholeheartedly recommend this magazine to experienced and beginner crocheters alike. There is usually at least one pattern that I will do out of each magazine. this is actually a pretty good deal, because single patterns typically cost about $5.00 to $6.00 per pattern, so $8.00 $12.00 for a year's subscription is a steal!

The patterns, most importantly, are modern and timely. This magazine does a good job of making crochet accessible to a wide audience. Some other magazines only do patterns with very high end, very expensive yarn. It is hard, as a beginner, to know what an appropriate yarn substitution is. With Crochet Today, you won't need a yarn substitution! Not only do the editors/designers choose reasonably priced and widely available yarns (most of which can be purchased at Michael's or Joanne's) they even show you swatches of what the pattern will look like in another color.

Advanced crocheters, like myself, will probably not want to rely on this magazine as their sole source of patterns. Interweave crochet is an outstanding companion to this magazine and allows your inner artist to really come out.

I do highly recommend this magazine, and I highly recommend getting a subscription, it is a huge savings off the "in-store" price and amazon.com has UNBEATABLE subscription prices to this particular magazine!

Flying (1-year auto-renewal)

FlyingI have had this magazine for well over 20 years. It does a good job of reviewing new airplanes, however it concentrates on the high end planes, and gives a good, but small, coverage of the latest (month old) aviation news. It also gives some touchy feely articles on flying from the corporate, private, technical, and professional aspect.

I believe it is lacking in in-depth coverage of future systems, long term reviews of airplanes, and also, long term upgrades of older airplanes. When they do cover used airplanes, it is not in-depth like the new airplanes and they do not go into third party vendors for additional items as much as I would like.

Overall, it is a good magazine, not great. I would still recommend it for one year to see if you like it also.

PS If you read it enough, I get the impression that they are overly conservative on safety yet in real life, I believe they fly normally.

As a private pilot of many years I have enjoyed reading Flying magazine, even before I started taking flying lessons. This magazine does a very good job covering the field from safety to flying various types of private aircraft. It is also interesting to read the personal experiences, both good and bad, submitted by readers of the magazine. I look forward to receiving each issue and recommend it to all private pilots.

I took enough flying lessons to solo but found when I could afford it I didn't have time and when I had time, well you can figure it out. The columns by Martha Lunkin are more than worth the price of the magazine and if I win the lottery I will own an Embraer Phenom.

I used to fly about 35 years ago and I still dream of flying again someday. It probably won't happen, but I enjoying flying vicariously through the articles and columns. I also highly recommend Plane & Pilot -another great flying magazine!

Kids Discover

Kids DiscoverI have been searching for a good magazine for my kids, and this is by far the best I have seen. The articles are in depth, and the pictures and photos are very high quality. Best of all there is no ads to confuse your kids!! Since I read so many bad billing reviews about this magazine, I decided to get it from my local library. Again, this is a GREAT magazine you don't want your kids to miss!!

We had a subscription to this magazine and it's a pretty good one for the kids, albeit woefully thin. I found it too expensive for the few pages the magazine has and did not renew it. After ignoring the standard renewal pleas, yesterday I found in my mailbox a letter (with subscription invoice attached, of course) stating that my account was "seriously past due" and that "further action is pending" on my "delinquent" account. For those getting similar notices, I found this number to call:

1-800-825-2821

The lady I spoke with said she cancelled the 'unathorized order'...we shall see if I receive any other notices.

It really is a shame that the tactics of the subscription services overshadow the actual product.

Recently KIDS DISCOVER has been "repeating" issues -that is simply reprinting ENTIRE issues it has previously published -this wouldn't be so bad I guess but they are not even updating the content.. the result is that they are printing old information that is more than just out of date and it's just plain wrong... I guess they are doing it to save money but they've lost my family's trust..
