This is my 4th year having subscribed to this prayer book. It has the daily reading from the Catholic Bible, which contains more books than the Protestant version, and in three years, if read daily you will have read the whole bible. I was diagnosed with ADHD shortly after my 7 yr son and immediately began to scour the Web for info. There is a lot of info but you have to take the time to find it this magazine brings all of that info together in print and online in short easy to read (particularly to those of us with ADHD) format. I want to know all the latest info on ADHD and now I can without the previous time and effort required. Because there's no "cure" for ADHD, it's a daily struggle (even with medicine) to find what works for you to help you overcome the frustrations and limitations resulting from the condition. The magazine helps remind me that I'm not alone in my struggles and that many other people have faced and are facing the exact same struggles. There's a strange comfort in kowing that. And I've learned a lot of useful tips which help me keep the negative aspects of the condition in check while allowing the positive aspects to come out. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this magazine! You will learn so much in each issue!

I am a pediatrician with 2 ADHD children. Although I have alot of technical knowledge on the subject, I have found this magazine extremely helpful in terms of suggestions for problem-solving day-to-day issues, and keeping things in perspective (if they discuss the same problems we're having in a magazine, then the challenges my kids face and my less-than-perfect parenting are not failures of discipline and self-controlwe're just part of the ADHD community!) Very straightforward, balanced, but mainstream viewpoint. Lots of practical articles about living with ADHD in all settings and behavioral/ cognitive interventions. Doesn't push medication, although it does provide information and tips on dealing with side-effects. Also light on coverage of alternative therapies. Plenty for both affected adults, teens and parents of ADHD children.

American Spectator

The American Spectator offers an eloquent and often humorous conservative viewpoint on the more pressing political and cultural issues facing the world today. The emphasis here is "conservatism", not "Republicanism" as TAS is often highly critical of GOP politics and policies that stray from conservative ideals.

Publications like TAS counter the insidious, tendentious underpinings of the mainstream media, hollywood, and the mistake that is the United Nations. I recommend you at least give it a look. Samples of its content can be found at

The American Spectator is a must read for anyone considering themselves an intellectual. Not only are the articles witty and well-researched, they also provide well-articulated arguments to the most pressing (if sometimes slighlty out of date) controversies of the times. I have been reading this magazine for the past year. This is a great magazine through and through. Their contributors are as good as those who do contribute to first rate Conservative magazines like the NR and WS. I like the simplicity of the articles and it is not so philosophical or hard to understand. A great read if you're interested in learning the points of views of the Conservatives. Moreover, their book reviews and recommendations are awesome. I always open this magazine where they have book reviews first and then I read other stuff. It's a good read!

I used to subscribe to TAS, back in the 1980s and 90s when it was a lively Journal that had a good deal of exciting writing and reporting. Granted it was, and continues to be, much more socalially conservative than I ever was, but I do try to read a wide spectrum of publications; I'm not one who reads just to reinforce my own prejudices. And there was plenty I did likeP.J. O'Rourke on Washington, DC; the annual Christmas book recommendations; and Ben Stein's whiny, self-pitying column from Hollywood.

Some years ago TAS fell under new ownership and new editorship and rapidly became a dull and uninteresting magazine that devoted increasing amounts of space to some rather bizarre pseudo-scientific areasthe kids of things you'd expect to see in a Lyndon LaRouche magazine. I not only quit subscribing, I quit looking through it on newsstands.

In recent years the new editors have made a real effort to restore the magazine that R. Emmet Tyrell made into the most talked-about (and hated) of the Clinton years, but the spark is no longer there, perhaps becasue the Clintons aren't either; time seems to have left TAS in its wake.

PETA Animal Times (1-year auto-renewal)

This magazine is loaded with ways that you can reach out to the animals of our world and find a way to help them. Never say "I am only one person--what can one person do?" PETA can show you ways to do even the smallest of things to protect the animals. Although I don't necessarily agree with everything that I read, I was very motivated to find even more ways to do my share in any way that I can. I have always been a great animal lover and fought against injustices toward animals, so this was a good choice for me.

I received my issue to find it is a PR product for the organization not a magazine. Guess I should have known when it was so cheap. Seems such a waste of good paper!

I didn't order it through Amazon, it was given to me as a gift by a well meaning but oblivious friend. Even if I did like or even find PETA tolerable, the mag is just horrible. Half truths and complete lies populate most of the pages and what ISN'T pure shinola is propaganda or begging for dollars.

There are all sorts of sane, helpful pro-animal publications. This one, is not among them. If you are a card carrying PETA member, who shows up naked at the rallies and is all for bludgeoning anyone wearing fur or eating meat...lets face it you already get this mag at the meetings.

For everybody else, you are about to pay THEM to drop the psychotic animal rights version of the watchtower in your mailbox. Much like the watchtower, if you are Jehovah, it is a very good thing, if however you are NOT...

Based on recommendations from authors Joel Heng Hartse and Jeffrey Overstreet, I visited IMAGE's online headquarters and discovered a faith-oriented publication that actually has both a brain and a soul. American Christianity so often conflates faith and politics, offering hamfisted rhetoric in a religious frame without a compelling portrait of Christ at the center. IMAGE is countercultural in this regard, offering both depth and breadth in its portrayal of a living, breathing faith that is intellectually stimulating, spiritually enlivening, and creatively challenging. I subscribed to the print version of the publication in a heartbeat, and have since contributed my own writing to the "Good Letters" blog on the site (a piece titled "The Cannibal and the Eucharist"). I cannot recommend IMAGE highly enough.

Given the title "Image" I expected much more in the way of visual art. In my first issue, of 120 pages, only 8 pages contain any visual art, and although printed in color, they are mostly small (2"x3"?) and hard to see. The rest of the magazine is filled with a long interview, 3 short stories, 13 poems, 4 essays, and a book review. Overall, the mix of material was disappointing. Too much to read and not enough visual art to experience. I already have too much to read. I was hoping this would be something different.

Handwoven

This magazine is great! It gives ideas, articles, and all in all, something which gives you the sence of connection with the weaving world and the weavers worldwide.

Projects galore for 4 to 6 shafts, and then 8 shafts. Rigid Heddle only (sadly) has only one project for it per issue. I would love more info dedicated to the rigid heddle/ knitters loom. But the magazine has great articles on everything fiber, to setting up your studio. Another Interweave publication.

This is one of them there glossy magazines that cannot come out fast enough. However if they came out faster you would not have time to dabble in the projects.

I have fun looking at the items I already bought and plans for the future. So far I have tried complex patterns but not any exotic articles. Pretty much stick to scarves, mats, and towels. However there are other items for the more adventurous.

You will want a subscription as this magazine is not found on many stands.

Lots of color, pictures, drafts and some time info on the contributors that are stars in their own right.

New York Spaces

New York Spaces may be a somewhat pricey magazine; but it's got quite a bit to it. The most recent issue features diverse articles that range from how to remodel a townhouse built in the 1850s to homes in "hip" Hoboken, New Jersey and even homes that are located in "the center of the art world." There are briefer articles pointing out new homes in Long Island City, New York, too. Although you might initially mistake this publication for being somewhat pretentious, New York Spaces is a very good home decorating magazine.

The articles are both timely and well written so that people can understand what on Earth the authors are talking about; and they have great graphics and photos as well. The quality of the paper on which the magazine is printed is rather good; and the cover is bound well, too. I was especially impressed with the article entitled "1850s Modern" which displays just how well you can transform a rather old home into something hip, cool and very sophisticated.

There's one minor objection that I do have: The magazine has many, many advertisements. This can be a bother if you're trying to learn from reading articles; but on the other hand the magazine advertisements display furniture and artwork very well. The displays in the advertisements are great for giving you ideas for decorating your own home. In a time when things are financially tough, you could skip hiring a professional decorator and take ideas from the ads themselves to design your home yourself.

Some of these featured homes may be pricey; but don't let that deter you. It's amazing just how much you can accomplish by getting decorating ideas from this magazine and buying very similar but less expensive things that accomplish your decorating goals.

Overall, New York Spaces is a solid decorating magazine for people who want to indulge themselves in trendy, "hip" homes. And why not--after all, you only live once! I recommend this magazine for people who want very sophisticated decorating ideas especially if they want to decorate their homes themselves.
