Handloader Magazine

If you have more than a passing interest in firearms and reloading this magazine is for you. A step above the novice rags without the typical sales pitch. Well written, just wished it came once a month.

On a get-a-way with my wife we went to the local Meijer. As she shopped I checked out the plethora of magazines. That's when I found "Handloader-Ammunition Reloading Journal". WoW! A little bit expensive, but well worth it! Even if you don't reload and are just a shooter it is packed with tons of information. Take it from a retired police officer.I'm here on Amazon searching for an inexpensive subscription rate. And I RARELY subscribe to any magazines!

Extra! - the Newsletter of Fair

The newsletter of the non-profit media watchdog organization Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (F.A.I.R.), EXTRA! provides unbiased, trustworthy news reporting criticism. Conglomerates whose interests oppose the people's continue buying broadcast and print news establishments. EXTRA! serves as a CONSUMER REPORTS of the news business, nailing corporate media on the half-truths and lies they report.

Come to think of it, if I could read only two publications, they would be CONSUMER REPORTS and EXTRA!. Along with learning which washing machines to avoid, you need to know when news organizations are defective.

And it's not just FOX NEWS CHANNEL, THE NEW YORK POST and THE WASHINGTON TIMES that get the story wrong. EXTRA! also calls out THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WASHINGTON POST, NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO and P.B.S. TELEVISION for incorrect and misleading reports.

I've been a subscriber to FAIR's "Extra!" for one year now. For a news junkie (such as myself), it provides great progressive-driven analysis and criticism of US mainstream media particularly cable news and major newspapers. They offer a progressive viewpoint, so this of course influences their perspectives on social or economic issues. With this in mind, they do a well-researched job in their critiques, something which CANT be said for the myriad of pundits on TV or right-wing media watch groups such as AIM (Accuracy in Media).

EXTRA is published bimonthly by FAIR (Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting, Inc.). Sample article titles in the current issue (June 2004) are "How Public is Public Radio"? and "Nafta's Hung Jury." The magazine offers criticism of media bias and censorship. The favorite targets seem to be members of the media elite such as Rush Limbaugh, Ted Koppel and Bill O'Reilly as well as leading newspapers including the WASHINGTON POST, NEW YORK TIMES, USA TODAY and LOS ANGELES TIMES. Attention is also paid to all major TV and radio outlets. The internet so far gets scant mention.

In order to fully appreciate EXTRA it helps if you are a news junky. I think I qualify on that score but I am probably somewhat to the right of the editors of this publication. It appears to me that EXTRA has a decidedly liberal slant. That judgement no doubt in influenced by my vantage point.

Abitare

Abitare magazine is an essential for those who want to keep up with the world of architecture and design, especially if they live in a locale where it may be hard to do so. Buying individual copies may be impossible in many places, so the subscription, while not inexpensive is one means among several to help you stay current. It is well produced and has a wide scope. It does not as get as bogged down in the theoretical or outright pretentious as other European design magazines do. It is helpful to open you up to new areas in architecture and design what you may not be familiar with. It's the one magzine in the field that is really an essential, in my opinion.

Metalsmith

While I agree with the other reviewer that this is a truly marvelous and inspirational magazine, the potential buyer should be aware that this offer is just for the magazine subscription. SNAG membership plus subscription is twice the price as the magazine alone unless you happen to be "attending an accredited educational institution full-time."

Whether you are a professional, student, or just interested in metalsmithing and jewelry, this is the magazine to subscribe to. I have been continually pleased with it and have found myself looking through back issues for ideas or just to admire. I am especially pleased with the annual exhibition in print that has an open juried exhibit within the magazine. You really get the chance to see the up and coming artists and fatastic new ideas.

Sponsored by the Society of North American Goldsmiths(SNAG), it is well funded with quality glossy paper and full color images. The articles may be a little short or lacking in content some of the time, and it may have more advertisements than desirable, but they are easily overlooked.

What, you still haven't decided? Ok, they also offer a student discount and full membership with SNAG (worth the subscription price in itself), information on conferences and events, hard to find vendors information (some of them I would never have heard of, even with the internet!), and did I mention the quality of the printed page?! Go, go now, subscribe. You won't regret it.

Glass Line

I have been reading this publication for some time now and as a member of the glass community I have found this to be the most informative source in the industry. With articals about not only glassworkers from every field, but how and what they make, this periodical is unserpassed in instructional and informative pictures and discriptions on a wide range of subjects. For the beginner to the expert in the glass industry, I would recommend this newsletter.

I am fairly new at lampworking, just saw the kit in a beading magazine and went to town on making beads. This book is one of my favorites, very well written and easy for someone like me to understand and create. I highly recommend this one for anyone of any level of lampworking.

I had hoped to get more about small soft glass projects with this publication, but it really seems to be geared more to glass blowers and those with furnaces. I'm sure it's fine for those folks, but that doesn't include me.
