If you have more than a passing interest in firearms and reloading this magazine is for you. A step above the novice rags without the typical sales pitch. Well written, just wished it came once a month.

On a get-a-way with my wife we went to the local Meijer. As she shopped I checked out the plethora of magazines. That's when I found "Handloader-Ammunition Reloading Journal". WoW! A little bit expensive, but well worth it! Even if you don't reload and are just a shooter it is packed with tons of information. Take it from a retired police officer.I'm here on Amazon searching for an inexpensive subscription rate. And I RARELY subscribe to any magazines!

Liberty Magazine

LIBERTY: A MAGAZINE OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

LIBERTY is the only magazine that I know of that is devoted exclusively to the relationship between church and state. The magazine is bi-monthly and each issue is about 30 pages long. It is one of many periodicals from the Review & Herald Publishing Association, which is a Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) publishing company. Although it does feature some articles on the SDA church, it should by no means limited to that audience. It also has articles on everything from Islam to atheism. The magazine's position is in favor of religious freedom for all Americans, although contributors to the magazine may disagree on what that means. Other topics covered are the role of religion in political campaigns and the implications of recent Supreme Court cases. Occasionally, an issue will reprint an article from another publication as well.

Although the magazine isn't very thick, it has quite a bit of useful information and I would highly recommend it if you are interested in first amendment issues. What other magazine can you get for less than $1.40?

This magazine should not be confused with the libertarian political magazine LIBERTY.

Paint Horse Journal

After subscribing to the Quarter Horse Journal, Reiner, and other large breed publications, hands down the Paint Horse Journal is the better read for articles, advertisements, and happenings. The biggest win with the PHJ is the advertisement are not intrusive in the article layouts. I have experienced difficulties even finding the articles in the QHJ and Reiner magazine because the advertising obscures the body of the articles. The PHJ's layout and design should be award winning. The article content is always fresh, helpful and informative without being redundant. I have been a subscriber for years and have yet seen a duplication in content. 5 out of 5 stars!

Circuit Cellar

I've been reading this magazine off and on since Electronics Now and Popular Electronics went down hill, and have been pleasantly suprised by the depth and quality of information provided. Design and implementation of topical projects are laid out and explained clearly along with the underlying theory. Don Lancaster always has an interesting spin on new products and ideas. If you're looking for insights into embedded systems development, look no further.

-but I'm not quite sure who it's for. It's just so cool, though, that probably doesn't matter. This month's issue has projects that use FPGAs, that generate RF test signals, that do encryption on PIC processors, and, well, lots of other stuff. It's all at that place where analog circuitry, digital design, and software become interchangeable, like that software tone detector people would have implemented as an analog filter back when.

So who is likely to enjoy this magazine? Serious electronics hobbyists, for sure, garage robot-builders and gadgeteers, engineering students at any level (grade school to grad school), and the people who teach those students or at least try to keep up. It's probably good for consultants who do electronic prototypes and one-offs, where fast turnaround and proof of principle matters more than volume production or FAA certification. And I bet it's good for any hardware engineer who wants to know more about software, or vice versa. It's for anyone who thinks embedded system development is just plain fun, if you do it right.

Who's not going to read this? Well, it's not a trade rag, so there's nothing about industrial deals and dealmakers. It's not an academic journal, and math is at the upper-high school level, at most. It's not for the hardened pro, except maybe as a way to unwind from a day of serious engineering or research.

It's a little quirky, and it's a bit away from my interests these days. But it helps me remember why I got into engineering in the first place `cuz it's a blast!

Circuit Cellar occupies a unique place in the world of electronics literature. Its scope (embedded systems) is a little too limited and the articles a little too advanced and discipline-specific to serve most of the dwindling hobby community. On the other hand, the magazine carries an enthusiasm and a sense of fun that's rarely seen in professional magazines.

I'm an experienced electronics and embedded systems engineer, and also a hobbyist. I somewhat agree with other reviewers that CC is too shallow for professionals and too hard for novices. However, in every issue I always find useful bits of information and inspirational ideas for my next project at work or home.

Every time I open an issue of Powder, the full-page photography immediately slaps me starry-eyed and twitching from my dull, nearly snowless existence into a world of stunning, winter-bejeweled mountains.

Powder's writing is excellent; combining irreverent fun with a reverence for all things (and all people) snow addicted. This magazine does not take itself too seriously, frequently including bizarre and wildly entertaining letters to the editor complete with Average Joe's often wacky artwork.

I will also praise Powder for something it doesn't do. It does not desecrate its content with articles that read "57 Pickup Lines for the Lift!" or "10 Ski Towns You Could Ruin By Moving To Now!"

Is Powder perfect? Nope. Someone needs to pass along that their font size is so small that it may actually be classified with a negative number. While the photography is jaw dropping, there are a few of us who buy Powder for the articles. Really!

So when the real stuff is not around, try Powder magazine. It may just pull you through.

Tropical Fish Hobbyist

I've been reading TFH Mag. since I was a kid. At that time it used to show articles on reptiles, frogs, etc. Fortunantly it got even better when it became am exclusively aquarium fish Magazine again. Besides it's a complete magazine, it delivers international subscriptions, so I could have mine here in Brazil. It covers every aspect of fish care, aquarium maintance, new species, diseases, aquarium display, etc. It worths every dime you spend on it. The best thing is that you can keep old issues, as I do, because they are always useful. Go ahead, you wont regret.

In past years, there were other good magazines in the hobby. During the last couple of years however, TFH has taken the crown as the best. I read every issue cover to cover.

I receive two fish magazines, but if budget forced me to choose just one, this would be it.

I have read TFH magazine for several years and have found it to be an excellent periodical about aquaria. It tries to accomodate all levels of hobbiests and I think it succeeds. It covers saltwater, reefs, freshwater and has special sections such as Discus questions or questions from children. I've yet to be disappointed with an issue. They are great to keep and go back to later for information on particular species.

I really like the great articles concerning the scientific exploration in various parts of the world and the continued search of tropical freshwater fish. Their newest addition is the livebearer section which TFH is now adding to their brilliant magazine.

First the positive. This magazine is well laid-out and has good photography for the most part. The articles are informative. There are enough reviews on here extolling the virtues of this magazine, so let me tell you the downside.

First, if you have saltwater aquariums you will find this magazine a disappointment as I have. The majority of the articles are for freshwater aquariums and ponds. I got this magazine for a year, and in that time found a handful of articles that were worthwhile for me as a marine fishkeeper. Needless to say, I won't be resubscribing. Of the saltwater articles they did have, many of them covered rare and hard-to-find species, and species that are hard to take care of. So again, not a lot of relevancy to most of us saltwater enthusiasts.

My other main problem with the magazine is that it uses the scientific names of fish almost exclusively. Now, I myself am a scientist, and there is no argument that scientific names are the most accurate and descriptive, however the title of the magazine is Tropical Fish HOBBYIST. The use of the scientific name and classification might be useful ONCE in the article, but after that becomes very cumbersome to read. There were many articles in which the common name of the fish was never used at all, and one had to rely on one of the pictures or a guidebook to even find out what fish they were talking about. If the goal of the articles is to communicate with the reader, then I don't think they're meeting that goal.

Another minor complaint is that while the photographs that are there are good, they do not provide illustrations of all the fish discussed in the article.
