Backyard Poultry

Backyard PoultryBackyard Poultry magazine is a fabulous publication. Bi-monthly it arrives, eagerly awaited, in my mailbox. It is loaded chock-full of great color photo's, as well as black and white photo's; some photo's even sent in by their readers. Some of the features of this magazine include: question and answer forum; where a professional will answer your poultry questions, personal poultry stories, features about the poultry business, farm laws, poultry recipes, breed features and how-to features. One how-to feature a few issues back was on how to butcher your broilers, complete with step-by-step instructions with photos too and written in everyday joe language.

One reason I enjoy this magazine is because of the wonderful variety and balence of stories and features. It covers a wide range of poultry interests. Another bonus is that the advertising doesn't swamp the stories.

This magazine is a bit like "Dog Fancy" for chicken lovers-but more practical and useful. Lots of interesting articles about different poultry breeds, both common and rare. My favorite aspect of this magazine by far is a lengthy monthly feature by "The Answer Man" who answers readers' questions about their poultry. I am always really impressed by his thoughtful, complete, and extremely helpful answers to very interesting questions. I have learned a great deal by reading this magazine.

In short, a really fun read for people with pet chickens, those considering getting chickens, and anyone who enjoys raising poultry.

I'm new to this magazine, and backyard chicken keeping and farming as well. I have a lot to learn and have picked up a couple of books on the know hows and how toos of it all as well. I originally picked up a few back issues of this magazine on Ebay and couldn't believe how enjoyable they were. In some ways its a typical magazine with its glossy ads, regular departments, question and answer and mail section, etc. But its subject matter over all is one of a kind to be sure. I know of no other magazine around that is strictly devoted to raising chickens in your back yard. Big or small operation this magazine is totally informative and more entertaining than you would imagine. Oh some of the articles here and there are a little beyond me yet to be sure. But in no way does this magazine cater to only the knowledgeable and experienced. Every issue I have read so far has had a generous amount of articles and regular features that cater to the true beginner. Besides, its a great magazine to have laying around just to see the reactions and comments that your guests will have... : ) Personally I love it and highly recommend it for either the seasoned or green backyard poultry farmer... : )

Still Point Arts Quarterly

Still Point Arts QuarterlyThese magazines are great. This will be a collectors item. Although Still Point Arts Quarterly is a new publication it puts others to shame. The quality of the writing, reproductions of the artwork, the paper, and even the type is among the best I have seen. I am so glad I decided to join its growing ranks of thrilled customers. I am looking forward to the next issue.

This magazine is a must-have for anyone interested in the visual arts. It features interesting articles about contemporary and past artists, and fine poetry as well. The full-color reproductions accompanying the writing are gorgeous too. Well worth subscribing to by individuals, libraries and schools alike.

It is beautifully presented and is of very high quality. I showed it off at a party all were impressed.

I'm honored and happy to be included in it. Thank you!

Dark Discoveries

Dark DiscoveriesI do so enjoy macabre stories, long or short. But Dark Discoveries seemed to try so hard to be cerebral, you knowcredible, that it left much to be said for the visceral thrill of spooky goodnessnot to mention it could use a lot more stories and a lot less "tribute." Take for instance the issue about a guy who wrote for Night Gallery/Twilight Zone. The editors of this magazine adored him. And it showed. Page after page of interviews with people who knew him. Why, they even reprinted the script for the TZ episode with William Shatneryou know, with the white fuzzy monkey creature out on the wing? Wild Bill with too much eyeliner? Lots of leering and sweatiness and skewed camera angles?

You remember, right? Not your favorite episode? Mine either. But heyI got to enjoy page after page of something already known and already cliche. What a waste of wood pulp to print that.

I really really wish this magazine, as nice looking as it is on slick paper instead of newspaper quality, had more stories and less "articles". I really like being able to have physical pages (rather than e-zines), but alasI won't be renewing my subscription. The discoveries in this magazine, for me, are more dull than dark.

Biotechniques

BiotechniquesMost journals you read in the lab are geared to your speciality These journals have research articles that are reviewed by panels of scientists in the discipline and are publications for advances in science. But "Biotechniques" was ground-breaking in that it published articles on the "how" of science rather than the "what" or "why" of science. The articles are peer-reviewed, but they focus more on applied science, techniques and methods. Articles might feature information about using new instrumentation, or new chemistry, reagents, or a way of doing a particular assay in a new method. It's also a good place to find out about new products and reagents.

If you do bench science in biotech, this magazine could be a valued addition to your monthly mailbox. It's not a research magazine in the usual sense. Instead, it presents small advances that you may be able take back to the lab and use immediately. They're practical, pointed, and presented in specific detail. Some times, they're so specific that they address the performance of specific vendors' instruments or reagents. This is truly a goldmine of hard-working information.

The problem with a commercial goldmine these days is that you have to move about a tonne of ore to get a gram of gold. Likewise, these reports offer pinpoint coverage over the whole map of biotech and if your work isn't exactly at one of those pinpoints, then it's probably a clean miss. There are occasional articles on computation techniques my main interest, but something that no biotech worker can wholly ignore. As with the wet-science articles, the computing reports are very pragmatic. I have to admit, I'm more interested in fundamental algorithms than in rough answers based on clever Perl scripts organizing people's tools and data.

This looks like a great magazine for people solving daily problems in bio/chem labs. Maybe not this month or next but sooner or later, it's bound to have a tip that works for you if you're the right kind of reader. I'm just not.

PS: Don't let the exaggerated list price put you off. You'll probably see a Biotechniques booth at some trade show some time soon, and you'll find a much better price. One extra rating star for being very affordable.

Continental Modeller

Continental ModellerFirst of all, let me preface this review by stating that it takes a while for the subscription to kick in..... almost the maximum amount of time for that matter. Then you'll notice the price. At 3 pounds 25, it is roughly $6.50 at the current exchange rate. 12 magazines equals about $78.00 but you are asked to pay almost a whopping 120 bucks. With that said....

The magazine is good. It is nice to read about Continental (European) layouts along with some American layouts that were built by Europeans. The paper and photos are high quality gloss all the way far superior to Model Railroader considering the price. The BIG negative... VERY SMALL layouts generally speaking, sometimes end to end book shelf runs. This as opposed to the MR layouts that are impossible to build because no one owns a 65' x 32' space.

In addition the magazine does have a section that reviews models as well as the annual review of all the manufacturer's releases at the Nürnberg Toy Fair. The only problem with this review section is that there never seems to be a bad review about any product. As a collector and modeller, I know full well that is not the case and is in fact pure fantasy.

I recommend this magazine, I just doubt anyone (including myself) will renew their subscription after 1 year.

Continental Modeler is an excellent magazine both in terms of quality and variety. Where else can you find model railways from the USA, France, India and Switzerland all in the same issue? The photography is superb and the writing a little less serious than RM or Model Railroader, but the skill levels are nevertheless high. I am also an enthusiast of the the smaller shelf layouts and most of the layouts featured are compact, focusing on one or two highly detailed scenes rather than vast basement empires. There are also some interesting railfan type articles of the real thing which adds to the breadth of this publication. Each one is a good read.

Urban Farm (1-year auto-renewal)

Urban FarmI like magazine overall. Great articles teaching you how to make hybrid trees and bee keeping for example. There a few articles that seemed a bit contrived community action. I get the social aspect, but I would rather have more focus on the techniques, how-tos, and learning than the social aspects. I would recommend this magazine to people living in urban areas.

I ordered this magazine on a whim during a promotion and both my husband and I are fans. My husband has previously remarked he would like to try keeping chickens and bees, and this magazine gives practical information and stories of those as well as on topics like container and community gardens. The content focuses on sustainable living without being preachy, with beautiful pictures. The magazine arrived quickly, within 2-3 weeks of placing my order. Most of the ads are in the back of the magazine, except when related to article content. Overall, the magazine is informative, a little quirky and fun.

Buy Urban Farm (1-year auto-renewal) Now

`Green' magazines often preach instead of teach with a finger-wagging attitude that makes reading a chore. Urban Farm makes sustainable living a fun, informative read.

The clean, easy-to-read design blends nicely with beautiful, full-color photographs and how-to illustrations that appear cover-to-cover.

This edition included 12 feature stories, four columns Backyard Coop, Curbside Tools, Green Thumb and Urban Feast and a handful of other pieces. Here are Urban Farm's five cover teasers in the July/August 2011 edition:

* Grow Hot Peppers on a windowsill or a balcony

* Street Smarts: Forage for Urban Edibles

* 4 Easy Steps to Freezer Jam

* Simple Bio-Retention: Incorporate a Rain Garden into Your Landscape

* Sweet Corn Season Arrives! Details and recipes inside

The most interesting feature is Debbie Moors' story `Not Just Window Dressing.' The story features the Windowfarms Project and introduces home-hydroponic systems that are built from the contents of a recycling bin.

I can't say enough about the photography. Sure, there are some stock photos but the main features nicely balance all the elements. Rhoda Peacher's freezer jam photos are simply mouth-watering (Yum! Brambleberry!) There are eight step-by-step color photos accompanying Michael Locke's instructions on how to build a kitchen table from a salvaged pre-hung door (each photo is given enough real estate that you won't need to rummage through a junk drawer for a magnifying glass).

In summary, Urban Farm is my best, new magazine subscription in recent memory. I'm pleasantly surprised by the use of color, quality content and the friendly tone. I used to find myself flipping through Better Homes and Gardens and Good Housekeeping, looking for something interesting to pop out but more often disappointed in the results. I didn't bother to renew Real Simple, which is chock full of pricey gadgets and so bereft of utilitarian advice it should be classified as a home show catalog instead of a magazine. If you subscribe to these other magazines and find them unfulfilling then I recommend Urban Farm.

Rating: Five stars.

I received the first issue of this magazine and I like it. It has a lot of good articles that are applicable to gardening such as raising rabbits and chickens. Some of the articles tend to be a bit too left-wing envirnomentalist for me, but overall I still like the magazine.

I live in the suburbs with about a half acre of back yard to work with. I have a large garden, chickens, bees, and dreams for future projects. I also like Hobby Farm and thought this would be some of the same with the town dweller in mind. Unfortunately, I have not been excited by my subscription. I don't find anything I can't find in Mother Earth News and I'm not especially motivated to take many of the articles a step further. I have no problem with any ideological slant that might be present but I don't find myself inspired by it either. I honestly wished I liked it more but I'm sure I can get my backyard farmer fix filled by other sources.

Total Guitar

Total GuitarIf you don't live in the UK, you'll often find a lot of music and bands you've never heard of in Total Guitar, but that's a good thing. As an alternative to Guitar for the Practicing Musician and Guitar World, which mostly feature the same transcriptions and cover artists you're already tired of ad naseum (and usually only focusing on a certain type of band for two years straight), TG, on the otherhand, is a breath of fresh air EVERY SINGLE MONTH. They may have a pop artist on the cover one month, a country legend another, a heavy artist the next, a funk or punk artist the following. In each issue, you can find a diverse palette of music to choose from with transcriptions and faithfully recorded instrumental tracks on CD for you to play along with and learn from (just like having a band right there with you), along with very helpful tips for the novice and experienced player alike. You're bound to find something new to pique your interest every time. Their only downfall is that they have an Oasis fixation that will hopefully come to pass, but this IS a UK magazine, you know? This is the type of magazine where you can find transcriptions of bands such as the Pixies alongside The Smiths, Blur, Van Halen, Elvis, James Bond, Metallica, and tons more. Guitar Player and Guitar World just don't match up. So you may be scared off by the pricetag of Total Guitar. I believe it's worth every penny. If you're just starting out, TG is like an invaluable set of FUN lessons sent to your door (or at your newsstand) each month, and if you already play, TG offers a wealth of tips and information to help you stay on your toes. Again, you're not only getting an action-packed magazine, but also a cool CD to play along with each month, and they have to import it from England, so that's where the price is coming from. Completely worth it, though. If you're like me and don't really care to see the 10th Korn transcription in Guitar Magazine in 3 months, then Total Guitar is definitely worth you checking out.

GUITAR PLAYER MAG

I collected Guitar Player magazines from 1978 and stopped only in 1988.I have been playing the guitar as a hobby for 35 years. Was in many amateur bands in my youth.Thought I knew every tricks when I was young. Stopped jamming to pay attention to family and career.

FUTURE PLUBLICATIONS

Then I came across Total Guitar, Guitar Techniques & Guitarist. These magazines changed my life. I learned to play near to accuracy the likes of Eric Clapton, George Harrison,Jimi Hendrix,Van Halen, Queen, Free, Bad Company, Jimmy Page, Hank Marvin,Dire Straits, SRV, Richie Blackmore, Black Sabbath, Johnny Winter etc. All the tricks were let out of the bag.

TOP NOTCH TEACHERS

The publisher Future Publication employs top notch guitarists as editors and teachers to share all the secrets with us. And the best of all, you do not need to understand music theory. All you need is some basic skill in understanding guitar tabs, a great love in guitar, a DVD player that has A-B setting & lots and lots of patience. Nothing equals the joy when you master a guitar part which you never thought you would have done on your own.

ONE MAN BAND

However one sad note for all new. The permits for new songs to be transcibed are getting lesser as the onwers of these songs now realize that the magazines reproduce the full backing track (without the guitar, some people call this MINUS ONE track)that is so close to the original that it can be used for public performances.

CONCLUSION

Grab all the back issues. Check out eBay. The old issues are reselling at very high prices as more and more guitarists are getting turned-on by these magazines. Goodluck.

Investors Business Daily

Investors Business DailyThe advice given in IBD is tremendously useful to both the novice investor and to the more seasoned investor. Following the CAN SLIM rules set forth by IBD along with the rules for investment success that IBD provides will enable you to be successful in your investment endeavors. The IBD 100 is a useful tool in which IBD ranks the top 100 stocks, based on fundamentals, etc. Obviously, the editorials prove to be controversial. If you're interested in making money and you don't agree with the views of the staff, simply don't read that page. I don't and I make money. If you want to ignore this paper simply because of its conservative viewpoints, you are probably doing yourself a great disservice. Yes, there are cheaper financial newspapers out there. The point; however, is not what you put into something--it's what you get out of it. The return on investment can be astounding if you let it.

You may think twice when you see the subscription price. DON'T!!!

Investors Business Daily (IBD) is the top resource for beginner to professional investor. Each day IBD uses their highly successful CAN SLIM formula for identifying the next up and coming stocks. Great Features include:

The Big Picture A daily paragraph reviewing the previous days activity, along with a barometer of how the market is doing.

The Real Most Active List of stocks that see unusual increases/decreases in volume trading. Not your typical Microsoft/Cisco/Nasdaq 100 list.

Investor's Corner A daily lesson on becoming a better investor. Using history and examples.

IBD 100 The current 100 most promising stocks recognized by IBM thru a multitude of fundamentals.

Leaders and Success A daily biography of a historical political/business/military/sport leader and how they changed the face of their industry.

Finally, when you subscribe you get access to the IBD Learning Center which gives lessons on buying and selling.

If you pickup one lesson from this newspaper it will more than save you or make you back the subscription fee.

My greatest lesson learned thus far:

No matter what, if a stock falls below 7-8% of your initial purchase price, sell it. No matter what.

Buy Investors Business Daily Now

Now a fifth year subscriber, this paper is my investing Bible. But remember, it's the INVESTOR'S, not TRADER'S Business Daily. If you learn and follow their CANSLIM method you will be a successful investor. Get rich quick? No, but you can definitely manage your own stock portfolio better than your investment advisor or mutual fund manager can. Give yourself two years to learn, and expect to make all of the typical mistakes, and probably lose some money. After two years, if you stick with it and learn from your mistakes you will be ready to make your stock portfolio grow. There's nothing more satisfying than controlling your own money successfully. Skip the right-wing drivel on the editorial page. I read it just for a giggle occasionally. But the advice on investing is GOLD!!!

I have enjoyed subscribing to this newspaper; also for it's online access. It has some interesting articles some times. It provides insight and valuable information about many companies (stocks) that I find interesting as well as about other news related to business. It does have some conservative writers; but it is only in the editorials and a few articles. I recommend this newspaper along with the Financial Times. The IBD does not have the range of articles as the Financial times.

Want Investors Business Daily Discount?

Ironically, I wanted to see what everyone was saying about IBD, to confirm that I had made a good investment in the purchase of the paper. Instead I feel that I must provide my own review. I will be retiring (hopefully) in 5 8 years and I wanted to make sure that my investments were going to take care of me. I pulled off some of my cash to invest, signed up with Scottrade and started buying stocks. One of the stocks I bought tanked almost immediately and my investment was down 22.7% within 3 weeks.

I had started researching and studying after my initial investment (BAD IDEA) and subsequently tried the 30 day free trial. Before I purchased IBD I talked to my FA who is managing my other investments and he indicated that it was a good rag and that he used it.

I started cramming and reading everything I could in IBD and started selecting stocks from the IBD 50 and the strangest thing happened; I started making money and lots of it. The first week after studying and surrendering to the CAN SLIM system I made 6.64% for the week. The second week I made 4.49% and this week I am on pace to make 2.5%; if I can continue at this pace I will have made back the money I pissed away when I initially thought .... hell anyone can pick stocks.

The paper is expensive if you are not working with much money; but I started with $220k, lost $47k in three weeks and I am $8.5k from breaking even I could not have made without IBD. I do not buy the paper for the editorials I read it for investments.

So there is my testimonial, I hope it helps new investors and nay sayers. You have to commit to learning the system, I am in fact extremely impressed and can't wait to see what I can do as I continue to get better at understanding the system and continue to improve on my mistakes.

Good luck everyone and good investing.
