I know that magazine subscriptions can take a long time to "cycle in", but this is ridiculous. Ordered for Christmas, may arrive by Easter. I understand that magazines have a hard time competing with the internet, but maybe this is one reason why.

I really like this magazine. Compared to other Mopar magazines, it has more hands on, budget builds, and how to's than most others. Tons of pictures and cool rides make this a must for mopar fans.

MSDN Magazine

People building serious MS apps, the kind where you have to figure out just what "volatile" really means, must subscribe. This is the map to the world they live in. There are lots of ads, covering just about every add-in, add-on, API, component, and service you can imagine, plus some. Do you need to know the difference between clusters, multiprocessor board, multicore, hardware multithreading, and application multithreading? You need this. UI, I18N, .NET, COM compatibility sooner or later, it's all here.

However, not all of us work as MS app developers. If you live outside that world, you'll find just about nothing of interest.

I have subscribed to MSDN Magazine for years now, and it really is quite good. Unlike most Microsoft publications, it is not "sales-pitchy" in that the articles are usually applicable to resolving common development issues, and there is very little subliminal verbiage geared toward buying other MS products that you don't need.

One thing to note is that they are very big on emerging technologies. This has its pros and cons...for example, they had tons of Visual Studio 2005 articles well before it was released, so it's nice to know how to use what's coming down the pike. And now (Sept 2007), there are a lot of Orcas (VS 2008) articles.

However, there is usually a large gap between when a platform is released and when you actually use it...so those articles most likely won't be useful to you until you actually have a reason to use it (i.e. when you employer adopts it). I often find that the most useful articles were written a year or two before I need it.

Another great thing about MSDN is that the entire magazine is available on their site for free, so you don't have to fork over the money if you don't want to. I just subscribe to give my eyes a break from the monitor once in a while.

You can read this online, but I like to have a physical thing to read. Also, I like to be able to give a little back to keep the content comming. This keeps me on top of some new stuff and give's me some ideas that I might not have considered in the past Like code contracts. I'll keep renewing until it doesn't make sense anymore.

MSDN magazine is pretty good. There are a wide variety of topics they cover (Windows phone, Azure, etc). Of course they are very biased in favor of Microsoft products, but I think that they're pretty honest about them, considering.

Swat : Special Weapons & Tactics for the Prepared American

One of the few firearms magazines that hasn't completely sold out to the advertisers. Too many gun rags have writer who have never met a gun they didn't like, but no so with SWAT, who will call a spade a spade when needed. The contributors list reads like a who's-who of relevant trainers and authors in the firearms and self-defense community. Pat Rogers, Scott Reitz, James Yeager, Ron Hood, even the often irritating but always though provoking Stewart Rhodes, they're all there.

My only complaint is the continued presence of Leroy Thompson, a distinguished professional who unfortunately hasn't written a coherent article in at least several years.

Many think this magazine is strictly for law enforcement, it is not. I have been reading it for the past two years, and while I am not in law enforcement, I do carry a concealed weapon, and am interested in how to best defend myself and my family.

This magazine does cater to the LE community, but upon careful examination, you will see that many of the articles pertain to anyone who wants to learn self-defense. Also, they write reviews on various firearms that are available to the public, particularly handguns. Moreover, you will find articles and write-ups on accessories, training videos and classes, shooting techniques and more.

The articles devoted to LE specifically are very interesting to me as a non-LEO; it's fascinating to see how to properly enter a building where bad guys might be waiting, or how to properly deploy bodyguards while protecting a VIP.

This magaizine is hard to find on the newstand, but if you can, subscribe and try it out. If you like firearms or magazines like Soldier of Fortune and the many other firearms magazines available, I guarantee you'll like this one as well.

SWAT is one of the best all around weapons and tactic magazines available. You get good real work advice from real world shooter and trainers. While it is called SWAT it doesn't cater to the police crowd. What you get is a good mix of article by a mix of author with a broad range of topics. From military to police officer and armed citizen to the person who just enjoys their weapons, SWAT covers it all. This is one of only two magazines I subscribe to and read constantly (the other being Small Arms Review) because it stays repetitively fresh and interesting.

I also get Archaeology magazine, a US publication. Both are wonderful and just great for those with active interest in the ancient world. Really well put together!

Company

I couldn't find this magazine at bookstores any longer, so I subscribed via amazon. Nothing wrong with the subscription itself, but the magazine has undergone a drastic change. It's not a glossy mag anymore, very rough newsprint bound paper. Also the content is all strange ads and nothing but fashion. Company used to be a magazine for the modern woman, with articles, advice columns, etc, but it's now for a very young woman without substance. I was quite disappointed, and I usually LOVE all things British, and previously loved Company magazine.

I could no longer find this magazine at any of the newstands so I ordered it through Amazon. I am enjoying it so much!!

Watercolor Artist (1-year)

The quarterly magazine "Watercolor Magic" features well-known artists such as George Gibson, Carolyn Lord, Stephen Quiller, and Janet Fish, who share their inspiration and techniques with the readers. There's always something in each issue for both beginning and advanced watercolorists. The magazine is packed with color photographs--even the advertisements are interesting. I only wish it were published more than four times a year.

One of my favorite features is the "Swipe File" where readers share tips and techniques, such as how to apply frisket with a feather, transforming plastic Christmas light separators into brush holders, and constructing a mini-sketch kit.

Here are examples of some of the features, taken from tenth anniversary February, 2003 issue:

"Ten Tales of Passage: Past and Future Perfect" Ten artists talk about their careers: how they started, where they're going, how to connect with people who might enjoy their art. Paintings from each artist illustrate this article.

I am a watercolor artist and instructor. My friend who is also a watercolorist gave me a subscription to this magazine for my birthday. It is full of useful information, hints, and inspiration. You will love every page of every issue.

I have to admit I look forward to this coming in the mail. I am a beginning watercolor artist and I greatly enjoy this magazine. With each issue you get to look into the styles of different artists. They don't just tell you about the artist, they show you tips and give ideas. A more advanced artist would probably get quite a bit more out of this magazine then me. There are even articles about how to sell, and how to market your art. I look forward to using the new techniques!
