Classic Motorsports

Classic MotorsportsTired of Car Magazines that are little more than thinly veiled advertisments for parts manufacturers? So-called "Tech" articles that are long on flash, but short on detail? Then Classic Motorsports is the car magazine for you! I love their DETAILED tech articles. I love the sheer variety of the cars they cover, and each article is an education.

Classic Motorsports (and it's sister publication, Grassroots Motorsports) are independently owned. They are not part of some huge media conglomerate. It's owned and written by real gearheads, and it shows on every page.

Joel

We get several magazines at my house, I typically thumb through them, read an article or two, and they get thrown out. Last Christmas my wife bought me a two year subscription to Classic Motorsports. As a British car nut, I knew that Grassroots Motorsports had purchased British Car Magazine to form Classic Motorsports but had not read the new magazine.

Classic Motorsports has every bit of the coverage on British cars that Brit Car did, the bonus is the coverage of cars I haven't read about. I find myself looking forward to reading about old Alfas, Datsuns and Volvos on top of my beloved British cars. There is coverage on the US cars, but the balance is dead on.

So if you like classic sports cars, and are looking for information outside of the typical pony car mags, check out Classic Motorsports. Every issue I find that I read every article, and reread many. Classic Motorsports was my best Christmas present of 2005.

Ok, I love cars but when I read some car magazines I'm left feeling like I could never afford to drive those cars. I wonder how many people find a review of a $125K car worth while..... If you have that kind of disposable funds do you really care what some editor says about the car?

This magazine and its sister publication is for guys like me who want to know how they can be part of the sport without using the kids college fund!

Ok, now the negative.....it only comes out 8 times a year!

Classic Motorsports Magazine and its sister publication Grassroots Motorsports are in my mind two of the best automotive publications out there. The articles are very informative, and written in a way that any enthusiast will enjoy them. No matter what their level of ability is. Reading these two magazines is like sitting in the garage listening to a friend tell you of their latest automotive adventures. This in itself would be enough to make them a must buy for me.

I used to have to buy British magazines to get information on the classic cars that I was interested in. I still buy them, but Classic Motorsports has been added to my 'must buy' list each month. Why? It's the only American classic car magazine that focuses on my interestsclassic European sports cars in America. The mix is always interesting, the articles informative, the editorial columns are entertaining and the photography is terrific. Couldn't ask for a better magazine to serve the needs of the classic sports car community in the US. Now that they are expanding to do more coverage of Japanese cars as well it just keeps getting better.

Woodsmith

WoodsmithOver the years, I have subscribed to several woodworking publications. While I am no woodworking wizard, I am an enthusiast who find the projects and writing of the Woodsmith staff to be among the best I have read. The pages are durable (unlike the cheap paper found in some magazines), the projects are interesting, the work shop projects and jigs are fun and best of all, no advertisements to weed through. Just page after page of useful information. Each magazine provides a cutlist (nothing unique to Woodsmith) and specific information for hardware (where to get it, the product number and finish) or other misc materials they use in their projects. They also have free woodworking videos online.

I actually read the magazine that this site Woodsmith.com supports. There are no surprises here. The site and the magazine shows tools and techniques of building art and practical objects from wood. There are detailed plans for many desirable objects.

A practical example is the making of dovetails. I am not an artist. So it takes practice. Well if you are rich there are tools that make them perfect every time. So what is the alternative? It is technique and the magazine shows how to measure twice and cut once. You can actually become a wood smith.

The site its self is more than just a composite or supplement to their magazine. It is easy to navigate to fine all kinds of recourses and tips. You can also purchase Binders to hold and keep your Woodsmith magazines.

My husband and I are still outfitting our house to make it a home. This magazine is loaded with ideas and full project plans for furniture, descriptions of the proper aspects to look for in tools, plans for setting up your workshop and making your own jigs plus tips! Our 100+ year old home has certainly benefited from this magazine and my husband now has a fulfilling and useful hobby!

There are two magazines on woodworking that no one should be without; Woodsmith and Fine Woodworking. Both are excellent and I have every issue.

I missed a couple of years of Woodsmith because I thought I was not going to do much in woodworking again since I also have other hobbies, and the house we have now is too full with furniture I made from both magazines, and of my own design. Now we are building a new house, my interest has been renewed, and that is what I did again with Woodsmith, I started up the subscription again. As soon as I figure out where I left off, I will be getting the back issues I missed, or the DVD (which I got recently with the FW magazine, well worth it too, so I might spring for the Woodsmith DVD).

The pages are thick, not flimsy like other magazines, and will last a lifetime. The first issue of Woodsmith is still as new as ever, and I have been keeping them all in the binders they also sell; helps keep everything in one place and the binders are very nice too, they have a slight padding inside the vinyl of the face and back of the binder.

I have built many projects from Woodsmith, including a secretary bookcase in a Chippendale style, where the bottom of the desk came from Woodsmith, the top from FW. Without these magazines, I would not have been able to do either, so that alone is worth every penny I spent on the subscriptions. Of course, I have built several other projects too. But these magazines make it so easy to do.

This is an awesome woodworkers magazine that has the most beautiful projects and the complete instructions to go along with them. It also has tips and tricks to aid you with your project from the magazine or on your own projects. I highly recommend this magazine and also recommend purchasing magazine through amazon.com, they offer great deals and if you renew a sub there is no delay in delivery.

Texas Architect

Texas ArchitectThis is a very well thought out magazine. The layout and the visuals are top notch. The paper used has a luxurious feel and makes the images very crisp. The writing is very good and the articles are well researched. If you have any interest in current architecture in Texas, or just have an interest in architecture in general I highly recommend you getting a subscription to this magazine; you won't be disappointed.

Military Heritage

Military HeritageOne the best military history magazines on the market. Always well written with articles from diverse and well balanced historical periods. Highly recommended.

I like this magazine a lot. I also get Military history and World War 2 magazine and this is my favorite of the three. The best thing about military history magazines in general is getting a new issue in and learning about something you had no idea happened. An example would be England ruling Argentina and the Philippines, did you know that had happened? I sure didn't. Also you will read, like in this issue I have here, about a battle contingency England had to invade the Washington territory in 1861 at the start of the Civil War; it's stuff like this that keeps me very interested in reading this magazine more so than the World War 2 stuff that I've probably over read (although it's in here also). Great glossy paper and pictures also makes it stand out from my other subscriptions, highly recommended.

Military Heritage appears to me to be a more scholarly magazine than Military History of which I also am a subscriber. This magazine will appeal to the Historian as well a the lay reader. I find the book reviews most incisive and helpful.

There are precious few magazines out there for the military historian with the appeal that this one has. The illustrations are stunning and complement the well-written and informative text month after month. One of my favorite magazines and a must-have for the military historian.

History buffs will appreciate the detailed depictions of battle this magazine showcases. The stories are rich in historical facts and illustrations. The only improvement could be the mapping accompanying each story, as it tends to lack the same quality as the writing.

Todays Parent

Todays ParentAlthough it doesn't say so on the description page (unless you look at a large version of the cover!) this is for CANADIANS only! I made the mistake of ordering it for my US daughter-in-law and it's all about Canadian schools, etc. The subscription rate listed in the magazine is $17.95 CANADIAN funds per year. I paid $45 for something I called and was told there is NO AMERICAN issue. So what's with the price listed here? What did I pay $45 for? Very irritating to say the least!

This magazine is an indespensible tool for parents. It is unfortunate that americans can't subscribe to this magazine. Recipes, Discipline Tactics, activities. Solutions to every problem all parents are facing and the magic is that it seems to grow with you. I highly recommend this for any Canadian Parent wanting to take their parenting to the next level.

New York Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

New York MagazineI absolutely love New York magazine. I have never lived in NYC and might not make it there, but the magazine still seems relevant to me. Being a weekly, the articles are always timely, interesting and important. Not only does New York provide a sense of what is going on in NYC, it also takes on national and international issues politics to pop culture. I always read mine cover to cover and desperately wish L.A. had a magazine like this (Los Angeles magazine SUCKS). Funny, to the point, interesting.

It's weird that most of these other reviews are concerned with subscription problems. I just moved to the city last year, and subscribed to both Time Out New York and New York magazine. After about a month, I found myself tossing out TONY, which with its papery material feels more like a TV guide to me, and instead carrying my copy of New York everywhere I go.

While TONY is more comprehensive about local events (i.e. readings, concerts, theatre, movies, etc.), New York magazine focuses more on New York culture and news, and especially emphasizing the media's current focus. For instance, last week's issue had Caroline Kennedy on the cover.

I've learned to trust NYMag's restaurant selections, and the reviews tend to be detailed and useful. Every week, it lists new openings or reopenings of restaurants, along with general critic's picks, which I've found very useful.

The layout of the magazine is also very friendly and endearing. There's the approval matrix of people and things that are currently in or out of favor, the culture pages, and even events for kids, not to mention the least, my favorite -the weekly crossword puzzle, which I actually like more than the NYtimes's.

If anything else, be sure to get the copy of 'Best of New York' when it comes out, for a great guide to the best of what the city has to offer.

Not for New Yorkers onlythis midwesterner is a devoted reader.

this is a very good general interest magazine. Even the New York-centric content is relevant to nonNYC dwellers due to the importance of New York .

I have read stories here covered nowhere else, the writing is consistently goodquality, and the culture reporting is particularly good. While some of the issues are less useful to me , like Best of New York or Best Doctors, overall this is a good reference even though I am not dining or shopping or living in NYC.

And you have to check out the back page! It is the first thing I turn to when my issue arrives.

Truthfully, I thought I had ordered 'The New Yorker'; however, I received my first issue last week and was quite happy with 'New York." A one-year's subscription for $15 ($19.99 $5.00 Amazon coupon) was quite the deal! Thanks!

Outlook By the Bay

Outlook By the BayA subscription to OutLook by the Bay has quickly become one of our favorite gifts to give. We have a very large family and struggle with gift giving for those who "have everything". The articles are inspiring and make you want to get out and enjoy being 50+. Holiday shopping just got a whole lot easier in our house.

I picked up a copy of Outlook when I was travelling in Annapolis last fall and absolutely devoured it. It was so clearly geared toward Baby Boomers on the go. The articles ran the gamut from travel, history, art, gardening, technology, and health, to hobbies, cooking, book reviews, and legal issues. I was thrilled that someone finally pulled together so many great writers who understand that most Baby Boomers are active and engaged and have interests that range from sports to music to community service and beyond. I'm not a luddite by any means, but I truly appreciated the technology articles that were jargon free, but still enlightening. I even downloaded a couple of the recommended apps! It's difficult to describe this magazine because it's so chock full of "stuff" that is entertaining and informative. There are little hints throughout that send you to interesting web sites and a couple of interesting how-to articles that I actually tried. A subscription to Outlook is my new "Go To" birthday gift for my Boomer friends.

The articles in "Outlook by the Bay" are clearly written and this magazine overall is relaxing to read. I get many new ideas when I read "Outlook." Most of the time I read it from cover to cover as soon as I get it.

One of my favorite articles are those that review games. The games mentioned are interesting and encourage communication. Games that the whole family can play together are perfect for family gatherings -a far cry from individual computer games.

I think that Baby Boomer's children would also enjoy it. As a grandparent, I leave it on the coffee table so my children can get ideas of what us old people think about and what our interests are.

Looking forward to the next issue!
